This week, October 4-10, is Banned Books Week! Click the link in our bio to learn more about Banned Books Week and The Banned Books Week Coalition. The Banned Books Week Coalition sponsors programming for education and advocacy to fight book censorship. 📚
This past summer, a new freedom to read law was passed in Massachusetts: An Act regarding free expression. This legislation creates a standardized, transparent process for schools and libraries to select and review materials. The coalition Mass Freedom to Read was a crucial force in supporting and passing the new law. The Simmons University Archives is now in the process of accessioning physical and digital material from Mass Freedom to Read, which documents the movement to protect freedom of expression during our current time of increased censorship in the US. The images above showcase materials from this new accession as well as material from our main collection that have historically been banned or challenged.
