The first Tufts Community TABLE (Teaching and Building Local Engagement), a culinary medicine initiative with Tufts medical students, is officially underway! Students had a fantastic time learning knife skills with Chef Saba and are excited to continue bridging nutrition science with hands-on culinary education.

A group of our MPH students attended this semester’s Tufts Table event! Thank you to the Office of Vice Provost for Institutional Inclusive Excellence and the Tufts Table Planning Committee for creating an enriching and meaningful experience. This year’s theme, “Stories That Shape Our Community: Where Paths Cross & Divide,” invited powerful reflection and dialogue across the community.

We asked Ashley Dasika (second from left) to share her experience:
“Tufts Table lets me connect with people I would have otherwise never met and creates space to authentically share diverse experiences. I leave having learned so much from new perspectives, and I love the chance to work toward the common goal of making our school a more inclusive place alongside members of the Tufts community”

Program Director Dr. Kimberly D**g and Tufts students were proud to participate in the ASPPH Annual Meeting 2026, joining leaders across academia, government, and practice to advance the future of public health.

A key highlight of the meeting was the closing plenary, “Leading with Purpose: Power, Partnership, and the Path to Health Equity,” featuring Rev. Shavon Arline-Bradley. The session emphasized value-driven leadership, cross-sector collaboration, and the importance of trust in advancing equitable health outcomes nationwide and globally.

Tufts representatives also participated in ASPPH Hill Day, where faculty, students, and partners met with congressional offices to advocate for sustained federal investment in public health. These conversations reinforced funding priorities across national public health agencies such as NIH, CDC, and HRSA, and advanced the recognition of public health as a professional degree.

Together, these engagements reflect Tufts’ ongoing commitment to leadership in public health education, policy, and practice.

Despite major medical advances, U.S. life expectancy stalled in the 2010s and still trails other wealthy nations.

New research from Dr. Leah Abrams, assistant professor of community health at Tufts University, and her collaborators, analyzed more than 40 years of mortality data and found troubling generational patterns. Late Gen X and early Millennials are already experiencing higher mortality than the generations before them.

Researchers found the shift isn’t driven by one cause. Rising deaths from heart disease, cancer, overdoses, accidents, and violence all played a role, pointing to deeper social and economic pressures shaping health.

The encouraging news? Past public health efforts like to***co control dramatically reduced deaths from lung cancer and heart disease, showing that coordinated policy and prevention can reverse long-term trends.

We are pleased to welcome Dr. Ditte Søndergaard Linde to Tufts University School of Medicine as a Fulbright Visiting Scholar this spring semester.

Dr. Søndergaard Linde is an Associate Professor at the University of Southern Denmark and Odense University Hospital, where she leads SDU’s Centre for Global Health and directs a research group focused on addressing violence against women in healthcare settings. Her research tackles pressing women’s health challenges: domestic violence, female ge***al mutilation, cervical cancer, and gestational diabetes; across national and international contexts spanning Europe, Africa, and Southeast Asia. Her work has directly informed national clinical guidelines for domestic violence screening in Denmark. She currently leads an EU-funded project on violence among pregnant women and a global health project on gestational diabetes self-care interventions in Vietnam.

Driven by a longstanding commitment to gender equity and reducing women’s health inequalities, Dr. Søndergaard Linde brings a deeply interdisciplinary and collaborative approach to global health research. She is a member of Women in Global Health Denmark and the Nordic Network on Violence Against Women.
