Your visa and your immigration status are not the same thing, and understanding the difference is essential for every international student in the U.S. 🇺🇸
A visa allows you to request entry into the United States. Your status determines how long you may remain in the country and which immigration rules you must follow while you are here.
For F-1 international students, maintaining status generally includes staying enrolled full-time, meeting academic and attendance requirements, following the rules for online classes, and speaking with your DSO before making important decisions about travel, employment, transferring schools, or changing programs.
Your visa may expire while you are inside the U.S., but your F-1 status can remain valid as long as you continue meeting the applicable requirements.
When in doubt, do not rely only on information from friends or social media. Talk to your DSO before taking action.
Save this post and share it with another international student who needs to know the difference. 💛
