Founded in 1919 by the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur as the first Catholic college for women in New England, Emmanuel today is a coeducational, residential college with a 17-acre campus in the heart of Boston's educational, scientific, cultural and medical communities. Emmanuel enrolls more than 2,000 students including 1,800 traditional undergraduate students from 35 states and territories and 4

2 countries. Emmanuel kicked off its 108th academic school year this week with words of welcome, advice, and purpose for the Class of 2030. 💙💛

"We want you to leave here prepared not simply for what you will do, but for who you will become," said President Beth Ross.

Keynote speaker Dr. Jason King, Director of the Center for Catholic Studies at St. Mary's University in San Antonio, spoke to the value of higher education, noting that college graduates earn significantly more over their careers. He also emphasized the unique benefits of Catholic education.

"Graduates of Catholic colleges tend to view work differently... they are more likely to say their work is a vocation, that has meaning and purpose," said Dr. King. "It's not just a job... it matters to you; it makes the world better."

Emmanuel College was honored to welcome U.S. Senator Edward J. Markey to campus last week for a conversation with our students.

Senator Markey reflected on the lasting impact of Dorothy Day and the Catholic Worker Movement and recognized Emmanuel’s pioneering history of educating women at a time when many colleges admitted only men.

Two Saints, two paths, one partnership rooted in community and education. 💙💛

Kyle Antoine '24 G'25 connected with The Calculus Project through a School of Education fellowship and has been with the program ever since. He just wrapped his second summer as a lead teacher, planning lessons and building a classroom culture where students feel comfortable thinking and speaking as mathematicians. That experience helped him land his first full-time teaching position at TechBoston Academy.

"Experience with The Calculus Project sticks out on a resume, especially when applying to one of our many partner schools in the Boston area," he said.

Oscar Cabral '26 followed a similar path — starting as a fellow before growing into a Peer Teacher Leader role, where he now hires, onboards, and supervises roughly 50 Peer Teachers each summer.

"It's heartwarming to build connections with the students coming into the program and then see how well they're doing afterward," Cabral said. "The Calculus Project does a great job of building community."

When Michael Mailhot ’13 was a student-athlete at Emmanuel, his basketball bio listed his career aspiration: “To become a basketball coach.”

A four-year starter and two-year captain for the Saints, Mailhot went on to a coaching career that has taken him to programs across the country, most recently the University of Chicago, which advanced to the NCAA Division III Elite Eight this past season.

Now, Mailhot is returning to New England for his next chapter as the head coach of the men’s basketball program at Clark University.

Emmanuel’s Department of Psychology & Neuroscience took the main stage at last week’s American Psychological Association (APA) Conference in Washington, D.C.

In front of an international audience of experts, Professor of Psychology Dr. Linda Lin and Professor of Psychology Dr. Clare Mehta presented their findings on how people are using AI in their daily lives for social companionship, mental health support and work productivity.

They were among just a handful of presentations chosen for the Mainstage – marking a major career milestone for both faculty members!
