With support from Boston University and with an endowment established by funds received from Newbury College, the Newbury Center was created to foster the success of first-generation students at Boston University. The center’s goal is to become a highly visible, transformative unit of Boston University, offering programming and services designed to ensure that first-generation students experience the same sense of well-being, belonging, self-efficacy, and academic accomplishment as their continuing-generation peers.

Proposals are welcome that explore the first-generation graduate and professional student experience across all disciplines, identities, and stages of the academic journey. This past Tuesday, the Newbury Center hosted an incredible First-gen Law Panel featuring four lawyers who shared their first-gen journeys and what it took for them to reach their positions today. Many thanks to the panelists--Federal District Judge Margaret Guzman, Jonathan Petts from Upsolve, Kate Mallary from Welch's, and Nick Nickic from Weil, Gotshal, & Manges, LLP and co-moderators who are current BU School of Law first-gen students--Christine Han and Rabiya Ismail. Our Terrier F1RSTS appreciated the panelists' honesty and optimism, and were thrilled for the opportunity to meet with them in addition to the many lawyers who volunteered their time during the networking session. We are very grateful to the BU School of Law First Gen Professionals student org, BU School of Law, and BU Pre-Law Advising for their support of the evening!

We are piloting a Boston University Libraries Passport with our first-generation college student community this semester. Starting the week of October 13, come pick up a passport and collect 3 or 6 stamps at the various BU Libraries for a prize. Return the passport to the Newbury Center front desk for a BU Libraries SWAG item or a tote bag filled with merch.

*All original 2-D art welcome, such as drawing, painting, photography, graphic design, collage, etc.
Artworks will be exhibited , November 3 - 10, and voted upon by the BU community. Top 3 submissions with the most votes will receive the following prizes and a Newbury Center swag bag.

First Place: $100 convenience points
Second Place: $75 convenience points
Third Place: $50 convenience points
