With support from Boston University and with an endowment established by funds received from Newbury College, the Newbury Center was created to foster the success of first-generation students at Boston University. The center’s goal is to become a highly visible, transformative unit of Boston University, offering programming and services designed to ensure that first-generation students experience

the same sense of well-being, belonging, self-efficacy, and academic accomplishment as their continuing-generation peers.

Tony & Maria wrapped up the First-gen Sendoffs with an event in our very own Newbury Center last night. Even though our greater Boston students won't be traveling far to begin their college journey, a good time was had welcoming them and their families to BU. Many thanks to our amazing local alumni and staff who came out to share their BU experiences with our newest Terrier F1RSTS: Jeff Abraham, Pauline Jennett, Rudy Joseph, Malia Montalvo, Lisa Robinson Schoeller, and Frantz Williams.

Our directors had another amazing evening welcoming our new incoming Terrier F1RSTS in the greater Los Angeles and Houston areas. We are especially grateful to our BU alumni and current students who took time out of their schedules to share their own personal experiences at BU. In Houston, Jenny Gruber, Leo De La Torre, and Mary Dinh; and in Los Angeles, Mark Curiel and Nigel Lifsey

While in Los Angeles, Maria met with the BU Los Angeles Study Abroad team to learn about all of their incredible opportunities and internships available to students. She also visited with Terrier F1RSTS alum, Mariana Cabrera Figueroa, whose favorite memories of BU were Fuel Up Friday and the First-gen Graduation Pinning Ceremony.

Tony and Maria are looking forward to seeing all of these new students again at the Newbury Center Orientation on Monday, August 31st!

Our Newbury Center directors had an amazing time meeting new Terrier F1RSTS who will be coming to BU in the next couple of weeks, as well as some CGS students who will join us in 2027! We’re especially grateful to our alumni, Jan Raphael Floro and Alexis Redman, and our past and present Newbury Center staff—Andy Zheng, Jairo Zelaya, Alvin Sun, and Tonima Bhowmik—for helping provide such a warm welcome.

Tony and Maria also had a great afternoon visit with one of our Terrier F1RSTS alums, Matt Branch, who directs the Urban Male Initiative and My Brother's Keeper at John Jay College.

Next stop for Maria and Tony, Los Angeles and Houston on Wednesday!

Your family will learn all about the Newbury Center and our resources. We’ll also discuss tips on how your family can support you with your classes, getting involved at BU, and understanding financial aid.
