There’s nothing quite like the fresh start of a new school year (or a fresh pack of pencils).

Boston University Questrom School of Business' Carey Morewedge brings a consumer-behavior lens to the annual back-to-school shopping season in a new TIME's article, explaining why these purchases can hold value beyond their practical function.

Morewedge argues that products such as backpacks, sneakers, and school supplies can help consumers signal and embrace new identities—particularly during transitions like starting a new school year. His perspective illustrates how purchasing decisions are influenced not only by what consumers need, but also by the symbolic meaning they attach to products. For retailers and marketers, the insight helps explain why milestone-driven shopping occasions can resonate so strongly with consumers.

Some things never go out of style.

Like building the confidence to walk into any industry. Learning to speak both finance and technology. Presenting to executives before graduation. Joining a global alumni network. Meeting future founders and collaborators in the classroom.

The "kinda chic" trend lets us celebrate what makes the Questrom experience distinctive: preparing students to thrive in a changing business world through real-world learning, meaningful connections, and opportunities that extend far beyond the classroom.

We're looking back on one of our favorite Questrom traditions: the Graduate Programs Awards Ceremony.

This special evening celebrates our residential graduate students for their outstanding academic performance, excellence in case competitions, leadership, and the many ways they strengthen the Questrom community.

One highlight of the night is the red carpet runway, where students are cheered on and celebrated like the celebrities they are. It's a fun tradition that reflects just how proud we are of their accomplishments.

Congratulations again to all of our award winners. Your hard work, dedication, and impact deserve to be celebrated.
