Today, the HSDM community celebrated our Advanced Standing students in the Class of 2028 as they received their white coats! 🥼

For these internationally trained dentists, the ceremony marked a new chapter in journeys that have already taken them across countries, health care systems, and communities. Each student brings valuable clinical experience, knowledge, and perspective to HSDM as they continue their education and advance their careers.

With their classmates by their side, the students recited the class oath and received their white coats, marking another milestone in their journey at HSDM.

“Today, you begin the next stage,” said Dean Giannobile to the class. “We are proud to have you as part of our community and excited to see how you will grow into these coats—and into the dental professionals and leaders you will become.”

Through a partnership with Harvard Medical School's MEDscience program, 13 high school students from across the country spent an immersive week at HSDM learning about oral health and dental medicine. Led by Dr. Sondos Alghamdi, lecturer in the Department of Oral Health Policy and Epidemiology, participants explored dentistry alongside HSDM faculty and students.

At HSDM, participants got a glimpse of life as a dental student, putting their knowledge into practice through hands-on lab work. From shaping dental materials and creating tooth models to practicing fillings, impressions, and orthodontic techniques, students gained a firsthand look at the skills dentists use every day.

"The students were enthusiastic and proud throughout the week, taking real pride in their work," said Alghamdi. "At the end of the program, they took their completed projects home as both a keepsake and a reminder of their accomplishments."

The HMS MEDscience Program introduces students interested in STEM careers to real-world healthcare experiences.

Dr. Samantha Parad was named the new director of the Advanced Graduate Education Program in General Practice Residency at HSDM. Based at Cambridge Health Alliance, the program provides residents with opportunities to deliver comprehensive, high-quality oral health care while serving in community-based clinics in Cambridge and the greater Boston area.

HSDM spoke with Parad about becoming program director, how her experience as a registered nurse continues to shape her approach to patient care, and what she learned from competing as a synchronized skater on Team USA.

Dentists from around the world, including Italy, India, Brazil, Mexico, and Austria, joined the HSDM community throughout the year for the Dental Implant Preceptorship Program.

Through these multi-week, full-time experiences, participants gained advanced exposure to digital implant dentistry through didactic learning, clinical observation, and multidisciplinary treatment planning alongside advanced graduate education (AGE) students and faculty.

The program offered participants a closer look at digital workflows in implant diagnosis and treatment planning. Participants also observed implant treatment and interdisciplinary case discussions at the Harvard Dental Center and gained exposure to ongoing research and academic programming across HSDM.

As part of orientation, HSDM and Harvard Medical School students traveled across Boston to learn about the community engagement work of 19 local organizations. From food insecurity to housing advocacy to community spaces for underserved groups, students learned firsthand how neighborhoods shape health. Many groups then helped clean up the neighborhoods they visited.

Students gained insight into the vital work these organizations do to support the very patients they will care for in the years ahead.

With white coats draped over their shoulders and family and friends cheering them on, students in Harvard School of Dental Medicine’s Class of 2030 took their first steps toward becoming the next generation of oral health leaders.

The 36 incoming dental students joined their Harvard Medical School classmates for a weeklong Introduction to the Profession, marking the start of their dental and medical education.

Throughout the week, students explored the foundations of patient-centered care and professional identity while gaining an introduction to the coursework, clinical experiences, and research opportunities that will shape their education over the next four years.

Dr. Balazs Feher has been awarded research funding from Harvard University’s prestigious William F. Milton Fund to advance his work at the intersection of precision dentistry and patient outcome prediction. An assistant professor of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at HSDM, Feher’s research leverages machine learning to make dental care more personalized.

By analyzing large collections of real-world dental data, Feher and his research team are developing predictive models that estimate how patients are likely to respond to different treatments. Over the course of the funding period, they will develop and validate artificial intelligence tools to support personalized dental care, study how to safely integrate them into clinical practice, and generate evidence to guide their responsible use.

Feher will also explore how these tools can empower patients and support dentists in making informed clinical decisions to improve care while keeping both the patient and clinician at the center of the decision-making process.

"Receiving this funding is both an honor and an exciting opportunity to advance a research program that brings together applied artificial intelligence and dental medicine for translating advances in data science into meaningful improvements in patient care," said Feher.

Introducing the Harvard School of Dental Medicine DMD Class of 2030!

This week, they began their Introduction to the Profession alongside their Harvard Medical School classmates and received their white coats, symbolizing their entry into professions dedicated to health care and service.

The 36 talented students hail from 15 U.S. states and two countries. Before arriving at HSDM, they dedicated their time to research, mentorship, healthcare advocacy, volunteerism, and expanding access to care in rural and underserved communities.
