Please join us on October 21 for The Future of Public Health: Maternal Health & Innovative Technologies!

This Public Health Conversation will focus on convergent research. Researchers from BU and beyond will share about current technological innovations being used in maternal health and reflect on emerging technologies that may have the potential to improve maternal health outcomes in the years and decades to come.

This event is part of our “Future of Public Health” theme during our SPH50 Public Health Conversations programming, celebrating 50 years of public health research, education, and practice at BUSPH.

Featuring: SPH's Lois McCloskey, Jane Hirst of The Georgia Institute for Global Health, SPH's Samantha Parker Kelleher, Tabinda Sarosh of Pathfinder International, and Joyce Wang of Boston University College of Engineering.

Can reliable access to nutritious food improve health?

In a new collaboration, SPH researchers Jacey Greece and Carlos Rodriguez-Diaz will team with Daniel’s Table, a Framingham, Mass.-based nonprofit dedicated to increasing food security and nutrition education, and Matmissionen, a Swedish grocery store chain that provides affordable food to people experiencing financial hardship, to better understand how this uncertainty around food access can influence health outcomes.

“Being certain about where your food comes from, and knowing which foods you will be able to eat on a regular basis enables people to plan their meals in advance and establish healthy routines. But if you don’t know what your next meal is or where it is coming from, it becomes much more stressful to plan ahead,” says Greece.

“At Daniel’s Table, success is not simply measured in pounds of food distributed; it is about what people actually eat, their overall health and well-being, and whether they have the tools to plan and prepare meals amid uncertainty. There is a genuine commitment to learning, collaborating, and continually improving services in response to what clients need.”

Congratulations to Jake Morgan (SPH'17) of BUSPH and Ashley Leech (SPH'17), of Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, on receiving a $3.7 million grant from the National Institute on Drug Abuse!

The researchers will evaluate the health and economic consequences of subpar buprenorphine dosing among Medicaid-covered pregnant women to guide evidence-based dosing strategies that will improve maternal and infant outcomes.

"We hope to show that increasing buprenorphine dosing during pregnancy is both an ethical and a cost-effective decision that can improve health outcomes for mothers and their babies," says Morgan, research assistant professor of health law, policy & management at SPH.

Congratulations to SPH and BU Med's Lindsay Farrer on being named a William Fairfield Warren Distinguished Professor!

There are few groups at Boston University as exclusive as this collection of esteemed senior faculty members. To date, only 16 professors have been named to the professorship, the highest distinction for BU senior faculty. Only 10 remain active.

“President Gilliam put the news out there, and I was a little bit in awe for a moment,” Farrer says.

“It makes me feel recognized, welcomed, and really part of the entire University.”
