Mary Catherine Carroll DMD 27 and MarKee Weaver DMD 27 were accepted into the 2026 American Dental Education Association (ADEA) Student Leaders for Social Change program, joining a cohort of predoctoral and allied dental students from the United States and Canada.
“Institutional change in oral health begins with education,” Carroll said in reference to being accepted into the program. “This is a program that is helping us understand and reimagine the systems that we are inheriting right now. [This will] potentially improve our education and come back to school with ideas that can help us and potentially GSDM move into the future.”

Successfully completing a dental degree is an extraordinary feat that should not be viewed lightly. But the learning doesn’t stop on graduation day: Oral healthcare professionals embrace a lifetime commitment to learning and growing. We asked GSDM faculty, staff, and alumni to share inspirational advice to the Class of 2026.

Here’s what Dr. Meredith Bailey, clinical assistant professor of general dentistry and director of education support & performance evaluation, shared:

“You are stepping into a rewarding profession full of possibility at an incredibly exciting time. There are many paths ahead, more than you can even see right now. Stay curious, take advantage of opportunities as they come, and trust that you are well prepared to make a meaningful impact. It has been a privilege to be part of your journey.”

Twenty-one members of the GSDM Class of 2026 will have a special moment with a loved one on the commencement stage, as their diplomas will co-presented by a family member and fellow GSDM alum.

GSDM allows alumni who are immediate family members (parent, grandparent, sibling, or spouse) of a graduate to co-present the diploma alongside the dean or program chair. Five graduates and their alumni co-presenters discussed what they are most looking forward to on the momentous day.

“For our family, this moment goes beyond my individual achievement—it represents years of shared support, sacrifice, and belief in one another,” said Kristina Caradonna CAMED 19 DMD 23 ORTHO 26 in reference to her brother, Scott Caradonna CAMED 17 DMD 21 ORTHO 24, co-presenting her diploma. “Having Scott present my diploma is a reflection of how every step of this journey has been shaped by the foundation our family has built.”

When Fatema Abdo DMD AS 26 matriculated at GSDM two years ago, she joined her son, Mohamed Hussein DMD 26, who was part-way through his own dental education. This month, the mother-and-son duo will reach the finish line together as GSDM graduates.

“We are very grateful for Boston University and GSDM for giving us this opportunity. It's not every day that a mother and son are able to share such an experience, and we're very fortunate to have been part of this community,” Hussein said. “[We] made unforgettable memories, made our friendships that will last forever, [and] mentors who we keep learning from.”
