Rooted in the musical traditions of the African diaspora and Caribbean cultures, Ezekiel and Soundz of Now blend percussion, soulful melodies, and ambient soundscapes into a deeply spiritual performance that invites listeners to slow down, reflect, and reconnect.

About Ezekiel Freeman-Fanfan / Soundz of Now (S.O.N.):

Ezekiel Freeman-Fanfan is a Boston-based drummer, artist, music therapist, and Berklee College of Music graduate (B.M. ’25). Drawing from his Caribbean and African American roots, his work explores music as a tool for healing, self-expression, and community connection. He has learned from and performed with artists including Samora Pinderhughes, Chief Xian Atunde Adjuah, and Esperanza Spalding.

As the founder of Soundz of Now, Ezekiel brings this vision to life through a healing-centered music project rooted in rhythm, ritual, and community. Blending ancestral practices with contemporary sound, the group creates immersive musical experiences that invite reflection, connection, and transformation.

About Alexa Nicole: Born and raised in Harlem, New York, Alexa’s Dominican and Puerto Rican heritage has helped shape a sound that’s both timeless and deeply personal. From performing alongside Jamie Foxx at the 2018 Apollo Hamptons show to headlining the New York Knicks halftime show in 2020, she’s continued to evolve as an artist and storyteller. A recent Berklee graduate, Alexa’s music chronicles the journey of becoming, navigating love, heartbreak, and self-discovery with true honesty.

What does it mean to build a creative life that’s grounded in who you are?

Earlier this month, our City Music Summer Scholars were joined by guest panelists W***y Rodriguez, Kimberly Burse, Ray Chew, Lisa Marie Lovett, and Nicholson Porter for an afternoon of music, reflection, and connection. The panel explored experiences in music direction and creative leadership, while also reflecting on each guest’s creative and professional journey, the importance of staying rooted in your “why,” and knowing yourself as you shape what comes next.

The afternoon also featured high-energy performances from The Trumpet Chicks (CAMDEN REP), alongside an all-star band featuring City Music Boston and Summer Scholar students.

A big thank you to our guest panelists for pouring into our students, and congratulations to our Summer Scholars on a wonderful summer of artistry, growth, and hard work.
