Save the date! Martch 5, Dr Beth Richie will be speaking at UMB, presenting on Black Faminist Anit-Violence Activism! She will be engaging with material included in her latest book, "Abolition. Feminism. Now."

Abolition. Feminism. Now. is a celebration of freedom work, a movement genealogy, a call to action, and a challenge to those who think of abolition and feminism as separate—even incompatible—political projects. In this remarkable collaborative work, leading scholar-activists Angela Y. Davis, Gina Dent, Erica R. Meiners, and Beth E. Richie surface the often unrecognized genealogies of q***r, anti-capitalist, internationalist, grassroots, and women-of-color-led feminist movements, struggles, and organizations that have helped to define abolition and feminism in the twenty-first century. - Haymarket Books, Jan 18, 2022

Dear Friends,

It has been a week since our WGS open-house event, WGS Writes (and eats tacos!), and we are still hearing kind words about the lively event.

We had a great turnout, just under 70 students and many faculty members and affiliates. Our aim was to showcase our WGS major and our 3 minors, Q***r and Trans Studies, Human Rights, and Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies, and the wonderful faculty who make it possible, and we did that in style!

Special thanks to our colleagues from our affiliated departments; Aaron Lecklider, Cassie Alexopoulos, Roberta Wollons, Steve Striffler, Ping-Ann Ado (who generously stuck around for left over distribution and clean up😊), Timothy Oleksiak, and our Dean, Pratima Prasad, who supported us in sharing the WGS joy with students and colleagues.

Each of the faculty members present, including our very own WGS faculty members, engaged the audience with their 7-word introductions to an upcoming Spring 2026 course, as well as their responses to the prompt, “Something you might not expect to find in one of our courses is…”, and the words were perfect, heartfelt, provocative, and engaging. Our authors also presented their selected work by reading the first and last lines of their books, creating a new response to their work and demonstrating to the aspiring writers in the audience how their thoughts evolve and connect through their composition.

Many of you had scheduling conflicts and could not join us, and we surely missed you, but we will continue to create opportunities to gather as a community. Please watch your inboxes for our next event!

You can also find information about upcoming events through our Facebook, Instagram and UMBInvolved pages.

Wishing you all the best,

The Faculty and Staff of the WGSS Department
