The first record of a student club at SMFA dates back to 1879 when two of the school's first students created the first non-profit arts association in the country. Today, SMFA students can join one or more of a dozen clubs - and have the opportunity to start their own with the support of SMFA Student Life.

In the 1930s, the visual arts were suddenly viewed as academic disciplines and required related degrees from accredited institutions. In 1945, SMFA and Tufts University began their partnership, offering a BS in Art Education - which later became the MAT degree - and formalized its BFA program in 1956. The MFA degree came along in 1959, likely to accommodate SMFA's first class of official Bachelor’s of Fine Arts graduates who wanted to continue their education.
