Sargent students! Join us for the next Summit Leadership Series event, featuring speaker George Church, founder of Colossal.

George Church is one of the most influential scientists alive. A professor of genetics at Harvard and MIT, he helped launch the Human Genome Project and developed the first method to read a genome directly. Known as the father of synthetic biology, he was among the first to turn CRISPR into a tool for editing human cells, and his ideas have spun out more than 50 companies at the frontier of medicine and biotechnology. Today he is co-founder of Colossal Biosciences, the company working to bring the woolly mammoth, the dodo, and other lost species back from extinction.

In this fireside chat, George Church will share what a lifetime at the edge of the possible has taught him: how to read and rewrite the code of life, why the wildest ideas are often the ones worth chasing, and where the science of genetics is taking humanity next. Whether you are drawn to medicine, biotechnology, entrepreneurship, or simply the biggest questions about life itself, this is a rare chance to learn from the scientist rewriting the boundaries of biology.

Coming up in the Summit Leadership Series: learn from Dr. Gill Pratt, CEO of the Toyota Research Institute (TRI).

Launched in 2016, TRI's mission is to enhance automobile safety, with the ultimate goal of creating a car incapable of causing a crash. It seeks to provide increased access to cars for those who otherwise cannot drive, including those with special needs and seniors. Furthermore, TRI looks to translate outdoor mobility technology into products for indoor mobility and accelerate scientific discovery by applying techniques from artificial intelligence and machine learning.

This event will take place at RKC 101 on October 20th from 5-7 p.m. Looking forward to seeing you there!

What if we could better understand how the brain learns to produce speech?

Sargent Professor Frank Guenther has been awarded a new grant from the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD) to study speech learning through deep brain stimulation.

His research brings together neuroscience, speech science, and innovative brain stimulation techniques to better understand the neural mechanisms behind speech motor learning—work that could ultimately help advance treatments for people with communication disorders.

Congratulations to Dr. Guenther and his research team on this exciting recognition! 🧠

What does it look like to make health research and education more inclusive?

At BU Sargent, the Q.U.E.E.R. Lab is working to create a more inclusive research environment by investigating health disparities among medically marginalized populations and exploring how educational environments can foster greater representation and belonging in STEM and medicine.

Co-directed by Dr. Jesse Moreira-Bouchard and Dr. Lisa Roberts, the lab’s work is helping expand who is represented in research, how health disparities are understood, and how future clinicians and scientists are prepared to care for diverse communities.
