Melanie Pina ’25MSW is a school social worker at a Boston Public School serving students in grades K0-6 in Dorchester, Massachusetts. A large part of her role, she reports, is providing one-on-one counseling to a caseload of eight to 10 students. She also collaborates closely with teachers, helping to implement students’ specialized learning plans, developing classroom lessons on social-emotional skills, and responding to crises.
Describing herself as a “visual, hands-on learner,” Pina chose Simmons, she says, for its experiential approach. Of particular interest, she notes, were the in-class practice simulations with actors.
“The program seemed very thorough and supportive,” she says.

Cassidy Martin, ’ 25 MSW, is a clinical social worker for the R.O.O.T.S. program, an initiative of the Gardner Athol Area Mental Health Association (GAAMHA) that supports adolescents and young adults facing challenges related to mental health and substance use.
Interested in becoming a therapist for children and teens, she liked that Simmons required more internship hours than other programs. Another strength of its rigorous curriculum, she notes, was the in-class simulations with actors.
“I was drawn to the program’s unique aspects,” she says. “I felt like I would graduate very prepared.”

Please join us in congratulating Professor Kristie A. Thomas on being sworn into the Massachusetts Governor’s Council to Address Sexual Assault, Domestic Violence, and Human Trafficking. We are also proud to celebrate Dr. Nathan Brewer, a Simmons MSW and PhD alumnus, who was sworn in alongside her.

The Council brings together leaders from across the Commonwealth to advance prevention, response, and policy efforts related to sexual assault, domestic violence, and human trafficking. Their appointments reflect a deep commitment to advocacy, research, and creating safer communities for all.

We are honored to see members of the Simmons community helping shape this important work across Massachusetts. Congratulations to Professor Thomas and Dr. Brewer on this well-deserved recognition and opportunity to serve.

Meet Kyle Greenidge ’25MSW, a school social worker with Boston Public Schools who is making a difference every day for students and families. From providing individual therapy and teaching social-emotional skills to conducting su***de risk screenings and supporting academic success, Kyle brings compassion, flexibility, and care to every part of his work.

After a decade as a school counselor, Kyle came to Simmons to deepen his clinical skills and expand his impact. Through the MSW program and the Social Work & Trauma Practice Certificate, he gained hands-on experience in psychotherapy, crisis intervention, and trauma-informed care.

“I think that I’m placed on this earth to be a light for individuals who need help seeing their way through a dark moment in their life,” Kyle says. “To help kids voice what they need to say is very rewarding.”

We’re proud to celebrate Kyle and the meaningful impact he’s making in schools and communities.

March is National Social Work Month, and we’re taking a moment to celebrate the compassion, dedication, and impact of the social work profession. This year feels especially meaningful as we recognize the many ways social workers continue to support individuals, families, and communities with care, advocacy, and leadership.

At the Simmons University School of Social Work, we’re proud to celebrate this month alongside our students, alumni, faculty, and the broader social work community. From advocacy efforts at the Massachusetts State House to classroom conversations that center equity and justice, we’re honoring the work and values that define this profession.

This month and every month, we celebrate social workers - the people who continue to show up, speak up, and make a difference every day.
