researchers set out to answer the question: “How much cooling does the campus wetland provide — and how far does that benefit extend?”

“Faculty, students, staff and administrators take great pride in our campus, and its sustainability story is told often,” said Dr. Santiago Lopez, professor in the School of Interdisciplinary Arts & Sciences. “One feature of that story, however, had not been fully explored: the restored wetland’s role in mitigating the urban heat island effect.”

Meaningful careers don't always start with a clear plan.

UW Bothell alumna Hannah Ravani ('16) followed her curiosity, built strong relationships with faculty and embraced opportunities that led her to the United Nations Global Compact, where she now helps advance ethical business practices and human rights on a global scale.

Her advice for students? You don't need to have everything figured out. Stay curious, ask questions and take the next step.

The first time the sticky note appeared at her desk, Maria Isabel Hernandez Olivares was a 46-year-old student at a local technical college, struggling to learn touch typing.

“You got this, Mama,” read the note.

It went straight to Hernandez’s heart. Her teen daughters, Erika Valeria Macias-Hernandez and Samantha Pamela Macias-Hernandez, had posted the message, and they would repeat the gesture many times over the next six years.

During that span, Hernandez — a Mexican immigrant with a deep love of learning — earned an associate degree, then pivoted to undergraduate studies at the University of Washington Bothell.
