OVA's director is headed to ACHA (American College Health Association ) national conference this week; this year in Denver! OVA has a session on supporting survivors that has been updated specifically for medical providers.
⚕Medical and clinical providers will interact with victims and survivors of various traumatic events. Sometimes survivors will seek medical care before they talk to an advocate, counselor or even law enforcement. How medical providers respond to and treat victim patients can impact if those survivors reach out for more help and support.
🏥In addition, many medical offices have added violence screening questions for new patients and just because the questions have been added does not always mean there is training on how to ask the questions in a trauma-informed way, or how to respond in a trauma-informed way. Based on this, a core goal of this session is to build on skills for providers on how to respond when patients shared about abuse, violence and trauma.
💙Looking forward to all the learning, connecting and increase trauma-informed care for victims and survivors.

Coping skills are things that can help manage symptoms related to the impact of traumatic experiences. There are different types of ways to calm, regulate minds and bodies that help build inner strength.
This handout is broken into different types of coping skills.
Try some out, see what works for you.
OVA advocate counselors are here for CU students and employees impacted by, or witnessed, traumatic events, recent or past and are here to help build coping skills.

The OVA staff are all trained in Psychological First Aid (PFA). OVA leadership are also trained as PFA trainers and have been working to take the PFA curriculum and tailor to CU Boulder. We did a training to over 50 CU Boulder Life and Employee Health and Well-being staff yesterday and look forward to bring this education to other areas.
PFA is evidence-informed training for for people who provide support to people impacted by various disasters like, fire, flood, tornado, mass violence and more. PFA reduces initial distress caused by traumatic events to foster short and long term adaptive functioning and coping.

💜This Saturday is Safehouse Progressive Alliance for Nonviolence () annual Chocolate Lover's Fling. 🍫
CU Boulder's OVA is glad to have been able to be a sponsor of this event for our important community partners for the last few years. Looking forward to sponsoring and attending again this weekend.
🌺Both our offices support people impacted by intimate partner abuse/domestic violence. And while OVA is here for those connected to CU Boulder, we do not have a shelter or some of the legal and other important resources DV survivors need, that SPAN does. We are lucky to have SPAN in our community and look forward to our continued partnership.
