What does it take to get published in a top-tier scientific journal?

A new study led by University of Colorado Boulder computer science professor Aaron Clauset, with contributions from professor Daniel Larremore and Sam Zhang (PhD AppMath '24), analyzed more than 110,000 manuscript submissions to examine the factors that shape publication success in elite scientific journals.

Published in Science Advances, the research found that institutional prestige, geographic location and other characteristics can significantly influence publication outcomes, offering one of the most comprehensive looks yet at the editorial and peer review processes behind high-impact scientific publishing.

By making their dataset publicly available, the researchers hope to advance transparency, support future research and inform ongoing conversations about equity in the scientific publishing process.

Researchers at the University of Colorado Boulder have advanced to the design phase of ASPEN-Net, an National Science Foundation (NSF) funded initiative to develop scalable quantum networking technologies capable of transmitting quantum information across long distances at unprecedented rates. The project aims to advance the future of quantum computing, communications and sensing.

The effort is co-led by Juliet Gopinath, professor of electrical engineering, Krister Shalm, NIST quantum physicist and CU Boulder Quantum Engineering Initiative adjoint faculty member, and Dileep Reddy, senior research associate in physics. Together, they are helping make scalable quantum networks a reality.

As host of ASPEN-Net's primary user facility, CU Boulder is helping lay the groundwork for a future national-scale quantum network while creating new opportunities for students, researchers and collaborators across academia, government and industry.

New leadership for the nation's second-largest undergraduate aerospace engineering program.

John Evans has been named chair of the Ann and H.J. Smead Department of Aerospace Engineering Sciences at the University of Colorado Boulder, succeeding Hanspeter Schaub, who is stepping down after four years of leadership.

A 13-year member of the faculty and former associate chair for undergraduate education, Prof. Evans led the development and implementation of a redesigned undergraduate curriculum aligned with the evolving needs of the aerospace industry.

He steps into the role as Smead Aerospace continues to grow its research strength in areas including human spaceflight, astrodynamics, quantum sensing and hypersonics.

We thank Prof. Schaub for his leadership and look forward to the department's continued growth in aerospace education, research and innovation under Prof. Evans' guidance.
