Can greater representation still create new stereotypes?

Seonah Kim, assistant teaching professor of media studies, examines how beauty trends on social media shape ideas about race, gender and what it means to be American.

Her latest research traces the “Asian baby girl” identity from its roots in resisting the “model minority” stereotype to its transformation into highly visual, marketable content. The result, Kim says, is more varied Asian American representation but also the risk of trading one set of tropes for another.
