Can soaking tadpoles in a purple probiotic bath save the Colorado Boreal Toad? Tim Korpita, a graduate student in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology attempts to answer that question.

There’s a fungus wiping out a special kind of toad that lives in the Rocky Mountains, but scientists may have a solution: a probiotic skin soak. The boreal

Pterospora andromedea or Pinedrops are a type of parasite known to only grow at the roots of pines. EBIO Professor, Jeff Mitton talks briefly about Pinedrop decline in the American north east.

Pinedrops parasitizes the mycorrhizal fungus directly, stealing water, minerals, carbohydrates and nutrients, but supplying nothing in return. In effect, it parasitizes a mutualism after germinating in the grasp of a fungus.

EBIO Professor, Valerie McKenzie was recently published in the journal Nature Ecology and Evolution. The study claims climate is a critical determinant of microbial diversity on amphibian skin, with colder, more variable temperatures producing richer bacterial communities than warmer, more stable environments.

A far-reaching global study led by EBIO scientists has found that climate is a critical determinant of microbial diversity on amphibian skin.

Its that time of the year when the Evolution Outreach Committee hosts the Family Day at CU Natural History Museum! This year on Saturday, Feb. 9th from 10am-4pm we will explore the theme of Timeless Trees: Rooted in Evolution. We have designed booths round the evolution of trees and we are looking for volunteers like YOU to man these booths!

As a volunteer you will need to sign-up for ~3.5 hour shift either in morning or afternoon. If you are signed up for a booth you will be paired with museum student, so you'll have support at while you are the booth! If you decide to sign up to be a floater you will give breaks to booth volunteers and help out at busy booths. You do not need to do any prep before the event and all volunteers will be provided lunch!

The CU Museum of Natural History is going out on a limb and tree-ting the community to a fun-filled day that is all about trees! From real trees to trees of life to metaphorical trees – you can explore them all. The roots, the trunk, the bark, the branches & leaves – all have fascinating stories...
