Graduating with more than just a degree โ€” but real opportunities to step into the field. ๐Ÿ–ค๐Ÿ’›

Showing up with purpose, passion, and a commitment to supporting students. ๐Ÿ–ค๐Ÿ’›

Every journey in school counseling starts with a shared belief: that students deserve care, understanding, and guidance that helps them thrive.

Grateful for those who are stepping into this space and preparing to make an impact in schools and communities.

Black school counselors play a vital role in supporting studentsโ€™ mental health, academic success, and college readiness โ€” especially for Black students who benefit from representation and culturally responsive care.

Yet across the nation, their numbers are declining.

According to the American School Counselor Association, the percentage of Black school counselors has dropped from about 10% in 2020 to around 8% in 2025.

Beyond the numbers are real experiences โ€” many report feeling unsupported and navigating systemic barriers within Kโ€“12 education.

This highlights a critical need: not only for more counselors, but for stronger support systems for those serving in these roles.

Representation matters. Support matters. Students matter. ๐Ÿ–ค๐Ÿ’›

29,100 projected job openings for school counselors each year from 2023 to 2033.

The need is growing โ€” not just to fill positions, but to support the increasing mental health and developmental needs of students.

Behind every opening is an opportunity to make a lasting impact.

UJIMA is preparing future school counselors to step into these roles with purpose, skill, and care. ๐Ÿ–ค๐Ÿ’›

Representation matters. ๐Ÿ–ค๐Ÿ’›

For many students, seeing someone who looks like them in positions of support and leadership can make all the difference.

Choosing this path is about more than a career โ€” itโ€™s about showing up, giving back, and creating spaces where every student feels seen, supported, and capable.

Because sometimes, being that presence is exactly what the next generation needs.

๐Ÿ‘‡ What inspired you to pursue (or consider) school counseling?

Becoming a school counselor isnโ€™t just a career path โ€” itโ€™s a commitment to showing up for students in ways that truly matter. ๐Ÿ–ค๐Ÿ’›

There will be busy days, heavy days, and moments where you question if youโ€™re doing enough. But there will also be breakthroughs, trust built over time, and students who remember how you made them feel seen.

You donโ€™t need to be perfect to make an impact โ€” you just need to be present, consistent, and willing to care.

For every aspiring school counselor: your work will matter more than you know. Keep going.
