This highlights a critical gap between what students need and what counselors are able to provide — reinforcing the importance of protecting time for direct student support, relationship-building, and intervention.

When counselors have the time, students have the support. 🖤💛

Big things are happening at Bowie State University 🖤💛

The launch of the Ujima Center for School Counseling Scholars marks a powerful step forward in preparing the next generation of school counselors who are grounded in equity, cultural understanding, and student-centered practice.

This initiative is designed to strengthen how we support K–12 students across academic success, social-emotional development, and college & career readiness—especially in schools where that support is needed most.

At the heart of it all is one goal: preparing counselors who don’t just serve students, but truly understand and uplift them.

When mental health support starts early in schools, students are more likely to succeed academically, socially, and emotionally.

School counselors help identify concerns early and connect students to resources before challenges become crises.

Prevention is powerful — and schools are often the first line of support.

A school counselor’s office is more than just a room. 🖤💛

It’s a safe space.
A place for conversations.
A place for growth.
A place where students can feel seen, heard, and supported.

Every detail helps create an environment where students know they belong.

Schools with comprehensive counseling programs see up to a 28% reduction in disciplinary referrals. 📊

Less suspensions. Better school climate. Stronger students. 💪🏾

This highlights the impact of school counselors in creating supportive environments where students are guided, not just disciplined — helping them grow both academically and emotionally.

Within the Counseling Department, student organizations create space for learning, connection, and growth. 🖤💛

From groups focused on psychology, school counseling, and professional associations, students are given opportunities to engage in hands-on experiences that deepen their understanding of the field.

These spaces also encourage collaboration, dialogue, and community — helping future professionals expand their perspective while building meaningful connections along the way.

Because learning in this field goes beyond the classroom — it’s also about shared experience and engagement.

Did You Know? 💡

Su***de is the second leading cause of death among young people ages 10–24 in the United States.

This sobering statistic highlights the importance of mental health support in schools. School counselors are often among the first trusted adults students turn to during difficult times, providing support, intervention, and connections to additional resources when needed.

Every conversation matters. Every connection matters. Every student matters. 🖤💛

A full-circle journey of impact 🖤💛

From being supported as a student navigating a new school system, to now stepping into the role of supporting others through the same journey — this is what meaningful guidance looks like.

Experiences like these show the lasting power of school counseling and how one moment of support can shape a lifetime of purpose.

This is the work. This is the impact.

Take a moment to reflect — who was that one person that guided you when you needed it most? 👇

Representation matters. When students see a counselor who looks like them, understands their culture, and speaks their language — healing becomes possible.

The Ujima Center for School Counseling at Bowie State University is training the next generation of counselors who will show up for underrepresented school communities — one student at a time.

The future of school counseling looks like this.
