HERE YE HERE YE ‼️‼️‼️ I present to you the FIRST EVER DMA clinic featuring presentations from our very own Jacob Koch & Liam Battle.

Prepare to be full of knowledge and food (bring ur own lunch)

Check out their abstracts below:

JACOB KOCH - "The Table of Time"
This presentation focuses on how to count and play rhythms within a consistent metric framework. These two ideas of counting and playing are expressed best through different methods of vocalizing and mentally visualizing the table of time in order to realize good rhythmic performances. Attendees will be invited to count and clap along with me as I demonstrate various methods of counting and playing rhythms, such as characterizing different rhythmic divisions by using animal names instead of different numbers in playing scales in different increasingly fast subdivisions against a 60 bpm metronome. Attendees need not bring instruments.

LIAM BATTLE - "Timbre and Labor: Theory and Praxis"

This presentation uses analysis and performance to demonstrate the value of a theory of timbre that involves consideration of musical labor. Ligeti's Atmospheres (1968) is analyzed in dialogue with Jennifer Iverson's writing on the role of electronic composition's influence on Ligeti's acoustic writing. This analysis shows that the key to the emergence of timbre is the labor of the orchestra, which is derived from the reified labor of the electronic music studio. This theory is then backed up with a performance of Bahar Royaee's Tombstone (2017), a score which is imminently concerned with the performer's labor.
