The Brookdale Adjunct Faculty Chapter of Local 2222, United Adjunct Faculty of NJ, has been in negotiations with the Community College since April. This is just the second contract for the local, and negotiations have reached impasse. The chapter has initiated a contract campaign to build power and to change the administration's positions.

Yesterday, the chapter launched a petition. We would greatly appreciate it if you'd consider signing and sharing on social media if you can. For those of you who are union local/chapter leaders, please consider sharing with your membership. Here's the link: https://tinyurl.com/dt7mae86

The petition can be signed by anyone, and the more the school sees that it is getting attention, the more likely they will come back to the table and work with the chapter on a reasonable resolution to our differences.https://actionnetwork.org/petitions/respect-for-adjunct-professors-at-brookdale-community-college-nj?source=direct_link&

Thanks to new rules just put in place by the Department of Education, many folks who thought loan forgiveness was out of reach are now finding that it is finally within grasp. To help our members get access to these programs and understand these new rules, the Raritan Valley Community College Faculty Federation and the American Federation of Teachers are proud to host a Student Debt Clinic which will provide information on how to enroll in Income-Driven Repayment plans and Public Service Loan Forgiveness.

We will be offering a Student Debt Clinic on Thursday, September 29, 2022 at 1:10 pm in Grand Conference Room A. Additional sessions may be added based on demand.

To attend a Student Debt Clinic, you must pre-register. Registration is first come, first serve, and we must cap attendance for a single clinic at 50 participants to ensure that we are able to provide maximum assistance to attendees. An email was sent to members on 9/12 with a link. If you aren’t a Federation member and would like to join, now would be a good time! Please reach out to Patti Kletz.

The story of low-wage workers rising up around the world to demand respect and a living wage.

Tracing a new labor movement sparked and sustained by low-wage workers from across the globe, “We Are All Fast-Food Workers Now” is an urgent, illuminating look at globalization as seen through the eyes of workers-activists: small farmers, fast-food servers, retail workers, hotel housekeepers, home-healthcare aides, airport workers, and adjunct professors who are fighting for respect, safety, and a living wage. With original photographs by Liz Cooke and drawing on interviews with activists in many US cities and countries around the world, including Bangladesh, Cambodia, Mexico, South Africa, and the Philippines, it features stories of resistance and rebellion, as well as reflections on hope and change as it rises from the bottom up.

Furlough Days Refunded!
In March 2020, the pandemic required a quick pivot to a remote learning and working environment. As the pandemic started to unfold, RVCC updated its budget and forecasted a $1.5 million deficit. At that time, the college didn’t know what fall enrollment would be. The college didn’t know how much state funding it would receive for FY21 and the college didn’t know how much emergency aid it would receive to address lost revenue.

When faced with the threat of layoffs as a result of the pandemic, all three unions at RVCC agreed to take 5 furlough days. We did this to save the jobs of our colleagues and help the college. It was a shared sacrifice for all full-time employees; we were in it together. Furlough Days began being deducted from employee paychecks starting in July 2020.

As time unfolded, state funding was restored and significant relief funding made its way to the college. We didn’t mind making a financial sacrifice to save our colleagues jobs and help the college, but our agreement was meant to close a $1.5 million budget deficit. That budget deficit was addressed through state appropriations, relief funding and better than budgeted enrollment numbers.

The college was in a position to make employees whole. The unions continued to keep the issue alive and justify the return of furlough days as an allowable use of American Rescue Funds, a use in accordance for which the funds were originally intended. The 5 furlough days were returned in our January 31, 2022 paychecks. With the inflation we are all feeling, getting our pay restored was desperately needed! The unions working together got the furlough days returned; to the benefit of every employee at the college.
