✍️ While many of us are settling into a new academic year, Dr. Alyse Bensel, Associate Professor of English and Director of the Looking Glass Rock Writers’ Conference, is taking a different approach to the classroom: stepping away from it for a while to focus on her own writing.

Alyse is spending the academic year on sabbatical, with several exciting opportunities already on the horizon. In March 2027, she’ll travel to Vermont Studio Center as the recipient of the Susanna Colloredo Environmental Writing Fellowship. She has also been accepted into the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts for a winter 2027 residency and is a finalist for the Goldfarb Fellowship for writers of creative nonfiction.

Alyse was selected for the Vermont fellowship based on poems from her unpublished manuscript, “Ecophagy,” which explores ecological destruction, environmental issues, and reproduction. Her writing is deeply informed by her background in both English and environmental studies and her interest in the intersections of ecological research, personal experience, and humanity’s relationship with the natural world. 🌱

Her sabbatical will also give her time to complete a memoir-in-essays that intertwines personal experiences with research on women’s health and changing perspectives within the medical community.

For Alyse, writing and teaching are never entirely separate. She says each continually informs the other: the approaches she uses in the classroom influence her writing, while her writing practice shapes how she asks students to approach theirs.

That exchange is one of the reasons she believes it is important for faculty to remain active practitioners in their fields. The creative and scholarly work faculty pursue beyond the classroom creates new connections and perspectives that ultimately make their way back to their students.

🎓 When Alyse returns to Brevard College, she’ll bring more than new work with her. She’ll bring new ideas about creativity, writing, and how to create spaces where students can develop their own voices. 💙

🌪️ Some conversations stay with you long after they end. 🌪️

During C.R.E.E.K. (College Readiness & Experiential Education Kick-off) Week, Brevard College students spent time with Jason Ferguson and Dr. Devin Walker, the duo behind R.A.M.P. Up, a powerful program focused on helping students navigate pressure, identity, accountability and the transitions that come with college and life.

Jason, an international best-selling author and speaker, shared his own journey from Division I athletics to a decade-long battle with addiction and, ultimately, rebuilding his life. His R.A.M.P. framework — Radical Accountability, Authenticity, Mission-Driven Habits and Pathological Optimism — grew from that experience.

Dr. Dev brings decades of research and professional experience exploring identity, athletics, equity and student success. And behind it all is a 34-year friendship that began when Jason and Dr. Dev were just seven years old.

The result was a conversation that went far beyond a presentation. Students were engaged, challenged, reflective and, at times, visibly moved.

A powerful way to begin the year. 🌪️💙

🌪️ Another year, another reason to celebrate what makes BC special. 🌪️

For the second consecutive year, Brevard College has been named a College of Distinction, earning national, private college, and North Carolina honors for our commitment to engaged, experiential education! 🎉

This year, BC joins an esteemed group of colleges and universities recognized for creating meaningful, student-centered educational experiences, including Carnegie Mellon, Davidson, Emory, Johns Hopkins, NYU, Rice, UNC–Chapel Hill, Notre Dame, and Wake Forest.

For the first time ever, Brevard College has its very own dance team! 🌪️💙

The inaugural Brevard College Tornados Dance Team is about to take the floor, and its founding members will have the chance to establish a tradition from day one.
