Congratulations to Joshua Gooden '16 who was selected as the 2026 Young Alumnus Award winner! 🏅🏅

When Josh Gooden was just 18 years old, he made two decisions that would shape the course of his life. First, he chose to attend Bridgewater College, enrolling as a first-year student in the fall of 2012. But at the very same time, he did something most college freshmen wouldn’t even consider: he ran for town council in his hometown of Elkton, Virginia. And he won.

After graduating with a degree in business administration in 2016, he spent a year with the Virginia Department of Transportation before continuing his career with Rockingham County. Today, he serves as Deputy Director of Economic Development and Tourism, where he plays a key role in supporting business growth, attracting new opportunities to the region, and strengthening tourism across the area.

His leadership has not gone unnoticed. Just last year, Josh was recognized by the Daily News-Record as one of their “15 Under 50” honorees. Congrats Josh!

Congratulations to Paul Vames '63 who is winner of the 2026 West-Whitelow Award for Humanitarian Service. 🏅🏅

What truly defines Paul’s legacy is his extraordinary commitment to service. For more than 50 years, he has dedicated his time and energy to organizations that strengthen Staunton and Augusta County, especially those that support young people. His leadership has touched countless organizations, including the Staunton City Library Foundation, the Frontier Culture Museum, the Staunton-Augusta Family YMCA, and the Valley Program for Aging Services. He has also served as chairman of the Staunton Board of Zoning Appeals and has been a steadfast supporter of the Arcadia
Project.

That spirit of gratitude and service is evident in everything he does. Paul and his wife, Martha, are proud parents, grandparents, and a true Bridgewater family, with multiple generations of alumni continuing his legacy. Congrats Paul!
