Join us for Curiosity Café, a new Lifelong Learning at Bucks gathering built around simple pleasures: something interesting to discover, good conversation, and a chance to connect with others over coffee and light refreshments.

This month, we’re asking: Whatever Happened to Halloween? Take a fun, nostalgic look back at the Halloween traditions we remember—and some that have disappeared along the way. Think homemade costumes, plastic masks, school parades, bobbing for apples, neighborhood mischief, pillowcases full of candy, and trick-or-treating after dark.

We’ll start with a few Halloween throwbacks to get the memories and conversation flowing, then compare notes: What was Halloween like when you were growing up? What do you miss? What are you happy to leave in the past? And how has Halloween changed?
Come ready to reminisce, laugh, share a story or two, and enjoy some seasonal treats. No costume required—just bring your curiosity!

This six-week course is designed to build your confidence in creating human portraits using soft pastels. You will explore both contemporary and historical examples, learn facial proportions and features, and develop their skills through a sustained project. By the end of the course, you will complete a portrait of your choice and take part in a final critique during the last class session.

Great artists are able to see the miraculous in ordinary objects. Seeing is a subjective experience that can be deepened by learning to draw and paint and by shifting all our attention to our visual perception. Topics include finding composition; using values to develop form and space and to engage our visual imaginations; exploring the differences between prismatic and earth palettes; and painting with the palette knife and variety of brushes. This “alla prima” painting class is individualized and will include demonstrations and lectures. All levels are welcome.

What made the First World War so important in European, American, and World History? How did the “War to End All Wars” become the war that ended peace? It was the first great long war that Europe had fought in a hundred years, and the violence and destructiveness of modern industrialized warfare shocked the nations. So did the enthusiasm of the crowds who cheered their armies as they left for the front with cries of “On to Berlin,” or “On to Paris.” The slaughter that resulted seemed out of all proportion to the immediate causes of the war. We will discuss why the war started, why it became so destructive, why Europe’s leaders could not stop it, and some of the ways we continue to struggle with problems this war
created.

In this complete 10-hour ServSafe training course you will be prepared to take the official ServSafe Certification exam which will be administered at the conclusion of the course. ServSafe training designed by food service and safety professionals, meets the requirements of state and federal laws and regulations. Individuals who complete the program and pass the accredited certification exam are recognized as Certified Food Safety Managers. This class is delivered in two 4-hour training sessions. The on-line proctored exam, with review will be administered on the third day.
