South Dakota State University's Sociology & Rural Studies South Dakota State University's Department of Rural Sociology provides opportunities both for undergraduate students and for graduate students.

Our students develop the skills sought by social service, human resource, and criminal justice agencies. SDSU offers Bachelor, Master and PhD degrees in Sociology. Those pursuing a Bachelor's degree can choose to specialize in Human Services or Human Resources. Our graduate students concentrate on one of three specializations: demography; social deviance; or social organization. Each specialty is dynamic and offers exciting opportunity. Join us for a Census Data Webinar on 3/4/2021 (12pm MT/ 1pm CT) with speakers presenting information on COVID-19 Hub and Community Resilience Estimates: Demographic and Economic Resources for Decision Making.

Speaker Mr. Andrew W. Hait is an Economist and serves as the Data Product and Data User Liaison in the Economic Management Division at the U.S. Census Bureau. With over 30 years of service at the Bureau, Andy advises on Economic data products and conducts data user training and outreach for the Economic Census and the Census Bureau’s other monthly, quarterly, and annual economic survey programs. He also is the lead designer and coordinates development of Census Business Builder, an innovative data tool that presents selected demographic, business, and other data in a user-friendly, map-based interface. Mr. Hait holds a bachelor's degree in Economics from Syracuse University and has a Masters Certificate in Project Management from George Washington University.

Speaker Dr. Bethany DeSalvo has been with the United States Census Bureau for over 10 years. Currently, she is the Branch Chief of Small Area Modeling and Development in the Social, Economic and Housing Statistics Division. Her branch is responsible for the research, development and application of small area estimation techniques to provide data users with finer detail data than can be provided by direct survey estimates. Her area is also responsible for exploring, developing, and extending the use of small area estimation methods to new content areas. Previously, Bethany worked for the Federal Statistical Research Data Centers (FSRDC’s) where she worked closely with academic researchers to utilize federal data to answer complex problems.
Bethany has a Ph.D. in Sociology and Demography from Texas A&M University. She has received several Department of Commerce Bronze Medals for her work.
