Over the last few weeks, SDSU College of Nursing alumni who participated in the PREPARE-RNS program came together to reflect on their experiences in the program and their transition into practice as new graduate nurses.

PREPARE-RNS, an academic-clinical partnership between SDSU College of Nursing and Avera Health, was a HRSA-funded initiative focused on recruiting and retaining nurses in rural acute care settings. While many alumni now practice in rural communities, those working in other settings shared that the program gave them a deeper appreciation for the vital role of rural nurses and a greater understanding of the communities their patients call home.

Alumni participated in focus groups either virtually via Zoom or in person. Those who attended in person also enjoyed reconnecting over a meal at Cubby’s.

Theresa Garren-Grubbs, assistant professor, served as the education project director for PREPARE-RNS. Karna Pfeffer, director of clinical excellence, education and quality at Avera Health and project director for the grant, also joined the discussions.

Special thanks to Danielle Currier, College of Nursing instructor, and MaryJo Benton Lee (not pictured), research specialist in the College of Nursing, for their assistance with the focus groups.

🚨🩺 Standard BSN semester five students recently participated in an on-campus clinical experience in Sioux Falls, where they explored emergency preparedness concepts and strengthened the skills needed to respond confidently in a variety of emergency situations.

Hands-on learning experiences like these help prepare our future nurses to provide safe, effective care when it matters most.
