Dear Kingsborough community,
The Kingsborough Art Museum invites you to The Astonishing Life [and Heartbreaking Death] of Gregory Battcock on Wednesday, May 1, 2024, at 2:00 pm at the KAM. Presented by Dr. Brian E. Hack, this lecture re-introduces the college community to Gregory Battcock (1937-1980), Kingsborough's first professor of Art. A painter, art critic, editor, and general provocateur, Battcock was already a member of Andy Warhol's circle when he began teaching at KCC and starred in several of the Pop artist's experimental art films from 1964-1966. An eclectic and curious figure in the contemporary art world of the 1970s, he was both urbane and underground, a connoisseur and a libertine both loved and loathed by the arts establishment. His untimely, tragic death on Christmas morning in 1980, still unsolved, is but one of the remarkable aspects of his intriguing life story.
This lecture on the art department's early history is presented in conjunction with Kingsborough's 60th Anniversary celebration.
