SJNY Brooklyn Campus Honors Program

SJNY Brooklyn Campus Honors Program SJCNY Brooklyn Honor Program Membership in the honor societies is based on both academic and non-academic qualifications.

While the requirement of superior academic achievement is common to all the societies, the nonacademic criteria for admission vary, according to the nature and purpose of the particular society. Students who are academically eligible for an honor society, i.e., who have the required index, are notified by means of the Registrar’s bulletin board. Eligible students must then submit to the Committee

on Academic Development an honors application, demonstrating their possession of the specific qualifications required by the honor society to which they are applying. This honors application includes an essay by the candidate, a documented list of activities and evaluations by faculty and others. The Committee on Academic Development reviews all applications and votes on membership in the honor societies.

St. Joseph's University New York was represented at the 2026 NRHC Conference in New Haven, CT! The university earned a number of awards this year. We extend our sincere congratulations to Dr. Michael Burke for his well-deserved recognition as Honors Professional of the Year 2026, and Jawad Zaman, who received multiple awards, including the Scholarship of Equity and Access Award and an Honorable Mention for Student of the Year. Jawad presented his research, "Emotions in the Eye of the Machine," at the conference, which utilized a live demonstration. The research explored the accuracy and ethical implications of AI-based facial analysis. We are proud of our students and faculty member Dr. Egbert for their commitment to scholarship and leadership within the honors community.

Faculty News 📰 | Dr. Michael Burke and Dr. Peter Lin presented a poster titled “Unending Drive: Uzumaki (Spiral) as Existential Koan” at the 2025 International Society of Contemplative Research held at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Their work used the Japanese manga Uzumaki as a symbolic framework to explore Lacan’s concept of the death drive alongside Zen approaches to confronting unhealthy, repetitive patterns in life.
