NYU-Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music Training music industry leaders and creative entrepreneurs since 2003. Students who enroll have a wide range of aspirations.

We encourage students to develop innovative musical ideas and envision new music business models, work collaboratively, cultivate both intellectual rigor and a willingness to experiment artistically, and to assume leadership roles in the art and commerce of creating and selling recorded music. We are newly located in Brooklyn, at 370 Jay Street - NYU's new home for engineers, research scientists, game designers, media artists, and musicians to interact and collaborate under one roof. We are proud to be contributing to NYU's goal of becoming the world center for technology innovation and creative engineering. Some aspire to become CEOs of record labels or management companies. Some aspire to become music producers who helm successful production companies. And others are performing artists, songwriters, publishers, social entrepreneurs, tech innovators, and music journalists who want to develop their business acumen so that they might build a successful brand.

On Sep 10th, CDI hosted Apple Music's Global Creative Director, DJ and Broadcaster Zane Lowe in a special conversation with legendary A&R executives Drew Dixon Pete Ganbarg along with CDI alums Rhea Pasricha Kullas Merce Jessor covering the legacy that Clive Davis left behind.

The panel reflected on the lessons and principles learned from Clive. Students in the audience heard first-hand about Clive's appraoch to identifying extraordinary songwriting talent, developing artists, taking creative risks, understanding changing technology, and connecting art with commerce. Clive's impact was visible on the panel, and crossed multiple generations of A&R and executive talent as represented by Clive Davis Instiute alums, Rhea and Merce.

CDI is very happy to welcome Scott Poulson-Bryant to our full-time faculty.

Professor Poulson-Bryant joins the Writing, History, and Emergent Media area of CDI's curriculum. He previously taught at the University of Michigan and Fordham University, where his courses spanned Performance Studies, Black popular music, African-American popular culture, gender and sexuality studies, and creative non-fiction writing. He is a graduate of Brown University and earned his M.A. and Ph.D. at Harvard.

Before entering academia, Scott built an acclaimed career in journalism, writing for the New York Times, Rolling Stone, and The Village Voice. He was a founding editor at VIBE MAGAZINE, and the very person who gave the magazine its iconic name. Founded by Quincy Jones, VIBE, as Jody Guglielmi wrote in Rolling Stone this past May, became the definitive "high-gloss print" authority on hip hop, R&B, and Black culture. He was also a staff writer for SPIN and GIANT magazines.

The John Lennon Award is an annual competition open to student songwriters and composers of contemporary musical genres including alternative, pop, rock, indie, electronica, R&B, and experimental. Established in 1997 by Yoko Ono in conjunction with the BMI Foundation, this scholarship program honors the memory of one of the preeminent songwriters of the 20th century.
