Some of the most haunting and human words ever written about war came from soldiers trying to survive World War I. Their poetry captures fear, grief, courage, and endurance with a force that still resonates today—and this course offers a rare opportunity to explore those voices in depth.
World War I brought profound upheaval, reshaping ideas about duty, heroism, and the world itself. In the midst of that conflict, poetry gave soldiers a way to make sense of loss, uncertainty, and trauma—and, for many, a way to endure experiences few could imagine.
Join instructor Bob Bunselmeyer for British Soldier Poetry Revisited, a compelling exploration of poets who experienced World War I firsthand and transformed it into lasting literature.
Together, you’ll explore the work of Siegfried Sassoon, Wilfred Owen, Isaac Rosenberg, Edward Thomas, Ivor Gurney, and David Jones, and discover how their words continue to move and challenge readers more than a century later. Through discussion and shared reading, you’ll also trace the development of combat trauma psychology, from Shell Shock to PTSD, and consider how poetry can both express and help heal such trauma.
