Do you know about Company 1433? It was an all-Black unit of the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) assigned to the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge from 1937-1941.
The CCC was established by President Franklin D. Roosevelt as part of his New Deal, federal program that provided job relief during the Great Depression. The work program enlisted single men ages 18-25 to improve public lands, forests, and parks. Company 1433 cleared roads in the Okefenokee Swamp, worked on bridges, constructed buildings, and other infrastructure.
Our guide, CCC Company 1433, has links to books, streaming video, and online resources. One of the resources we highlight is the Company1433 Project, which has collaborated with Digital Library of Georgia to preserve and digitize materials such as the "Bonnel Stone Beacon," the Company 1433's newsletter.
Our guide also has a link to information about Coastal of Coastal Georgia's inaugural Biennial Okefenokee Science Symposium happening Oct. 16-17, 2026.
