Congratulations to faculty member Tara Maxa on being selected as a 2026-2028 Jonas Scholar! 🎉

Maxa is one of just 80 doctoral nursing students nationwide selected for this prestigious program, which provides scholarship support to PhD and DNP candidates. She is pursuing her PhD in nursing at Vanderbilt University.

Our McAllen nursing students recently completed Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training at the McAllen Firefighter Training Facility, gaining hands-on experience in disaster preparedness, fire safety and basic emergency response.

Earlier this week, College of Nursing faculty members attended Pink Alliance’s annual Surviving & Thriving Luncheon.

The event raises funds for local breast cancer patients while recognizing survivors and highlighting the importance of breast health across the Brazos Valley. 💗

Congratulations to Dr. Susan McKee on being selected to serve on the Texas Nurses Association Policy Council!

In this role, Dr. McKee will help gather feedback from Texas nurses, research policy issues and support TNA’s legislative priorities and board recommendations. We’re proud to see her bring her expertise to this important work!

Valerie Herrera wanted to be well prepared for the birth of her daughter, Maya. She found Community Hands Advancing Maternal Health Promotion (CHAMPions), a free College of Nursing-led home visiting program designed to support pregnant and postpartum women and their families.

CHAMPions is coordinated by the college's Program of Excellence for Mothers, Children and Families in partnership with Driscoll Children’s Hospital, Driscoll Health Plan, and the Driscoll and Texas A&M Health Global Institute for Hispanic Health. It paired Herrera with a community health worker who helped her navigate pregnancy and postpartum life through visits and other support.

Congratulations to Dr. Angela Mulcahy-Spence, associate dean for Undergraduate Nursing Education and interim assistant dean for Undergraduate Nursing Education – Round Rock, on receiving the Association of Former Students Distinguished Achievement Award at the College level!

This award honors faculty who set an exceptional standard for teaching through their expertise, dedication to students, commitment to academic excellence and ability to inspire and support the next generation of professionals.

Dr. Mulcahy-Spence received the award during the College of Nursing’s Fall Kickoff last month.

Congratulations to Dr. Lisa Haddad, executive associate dean and interim associate dean for Graduate and Professional Nursing Education, on receiving The DAISY Award! This honor recognizes nurses who consistently go above and beyond in their care and service to others.

From the nomination: “She creates an environment of trust and intellectual curiosity, meeting each learner where they are and fostering growth with caring, patience and humility.”

Dr. Haddad received The DAISY Award during the College of Nursing’s Fall Kickoff last month.

Another Dean’s Faculty Seedling Award was awarded to Dr. Katie Hepfer, Dr. Lyndsay MacKay and Karen Thomas for their collaborative proposal, “Early Development of CUES (Caregiver Understanding of Early Signals): Establishing AI Foundations for Infant Cue Detection.”

They were recognized during the College of Nursing’s Fall Kickoff last month. Congratulations to the team on their exciting work!
