Every teen deserves the opportunity to arrive safely. During National Teen Driver Safety Week, we're highlighting TTI's Teens in the Driver Seat (TDS), a peer-to-peer youth traffic safety program that empowers teens to make safer choices behind the wheel, as passengers and around vulnerable road users. Founded in 2002 at a single high school in San Antonio, TDS has grown into a nationally recognized injury prevention program serving students in 31 states through support from public and private partners.

What makes TDS unique is that teens lead the conversation. For Teen Advisory Board member Itzy Santos, TDS has provided a platform to advocate for safer driving habits among her peers.

“Teens in the Driver Seat provides a platform for us to connect with others and our community. As a board member, I've had the opportunity to advocate for implementing Teens in the Driver Seat in more schools and encourage young people to make safer choices behind the wheel," said Santos.

This week, we encourage parents, educators, mentors, employers, community leaders and teens to start a conversation about safe choices on the road. Those conversations don't have to be perfect. They just need to happen. Learn more about this free traffic safety program at https://bit.ly/40oODWW.

As the 100th Annual Transportation Short Course concludes, the milestone offers an opportunity to reflect on a tradition that has shaped transportation in Texas for generations.

The Transportation Short Course highlights the longstanding partnership among the Texas A&M Transportation Institute, the Texas Department of Transportation and its predecessor, the Texas Highway Department, and Texas A&M University. For decades, the event has served as a forum for sharing research, discussing emerging challenges and exploring solutions to improve the state's transportation system.

While the topics and technologies have evolved over the years, the event's mission has remained the same: fostering collaboration and advancing transportation through the exchange of knowledge and ideas.

In the latest , TTI's Allan Rutter sits down with Ellis Giles, TTI's AI innovation research director, to discuss the growth and impact of artificial intelligence. Their conversation explores the evolution of AI, including machine learning, generative AI and agentic AI, as well as the opportunities and concerns these technologies present for business, government and transportation. The discussion highlights how AI can help improve transportation safety, optimize traffic flow and support more efficient analysis of increasingly complex data.

On Sept. 23, ten law enforcement officers from across the Texas Department of Transportation - Bryan District were recognized for their commitment to impaired driving enforcement and roadway safety during the Highway Heroes Impaired Driving Enforcement Awards Luncheon.

Sponsored by TTI's Center for Alcohol and Drug Education Studies, the event brought together approximately 100 law enforcement representatives, community leaders and transportation safety professionals from across the Bryan District’s 10-county region to recognize officers whose enforcement efforts help prevent impaired driving crashes, injuries and fatalities. TTI Director Greg Winfree opened the ceremony by emphasizing the importance of partnerships in supporting safer roadways across Texas. The program continued with speakers Jessica Olguin and Steve Burres, who shared their personal stories and the lasting impact of impaired driving, and recognition of Texas Department of Transportation Traffic Safety Specialist Lindsey Schroeder for her contributions to impaired driving prevention throughout the district.

Thank you to the officers and transportation safety partners whose continued efforts help make Texas roadways safer.

Behind every research project are people committed to making transportation safer. During Rail Safety Week, we’re proud to recognize the TTI researchers whose work is helping communities better understand risk, improve crossings, develop new technologies and create safer ways for people and vehicles to interact with rail systems.

Ports and waterways are essential to keeping people, goods and economies moving. On World Maritime Day, we’re highlighting how research at TTI's Center for Ports and Waterways (CPW) is helping strengthen these critical transportation systems.

For nearly three decades, CPW has connected research, policy and practice to address complex maritime transportation challenges. From coastal and inland waterways to Great Lakes systems, CPW provides practical tools, analysis and expertise that support public agencies, industry partners and communities across the nation.

In Texas, TTI research is exploring how technology can make communities safer around rail crossings. The project uses technologies including LiDAR and machine learning to monitor trains and estimate how long a crossing may be blocked. That information can help first responders make more informed routing decisions, reducing the chance that an emergency response is delayed by a train.

TTI researchers have studied pedestrian interactions with light rail, commuter rail and streetcar systems at designated crossings and unsafe instances of trespassing along tracks.

By identifying where and why potentially dangerous interactions occur, this research can help agencies evaluate safety strategies and infrastructure improvements, including pedestrian bridges, underpasses and other grade-separated crossings.

These insights help agencies determine which solutions are best suited to improve pedestrian safety around rail systems.

Improving rail crossing safety requires looking beyond individual crossings to understand risk across an entire transportation system.

TTI researchers helped develop federal guidance for Grade Crossing Safety Action Plans, including approaches for examining crashes, risk factors and safety needs statewide. When states were later required to develop their own plans, TTI researchers helped Texas apply that approach through its state safety action plan.

The work is helping transportation agencies take a more systematic approach to identifying and addressing grade crossing safety needs.

It’s Rail Safety Week, and TTI researchers are working across a range of projects to improve safety where roadways, people and railroads intersect. That work includes helping agencies identify higher-risk crossings, studying pedestrian interactions with rail systems, evaluating new technologies and developing strategies to address infrastructure and operational challenges. Throughout the week, we’ll highlight several TTI rail safety projects and the researchers behind them.
