On this graduation weekend, we want to honor all of our students, those who stood out, and some special individuals. First, we would like to congratulate those who were awarded The Clinical Excellence Award. While approximately 9 students had a vote from at least one supervisor, these four graduate clinicians received votes from all of their supervisors. Clinical knowledge is the bedrock of application. These students demonstrated so much more: quiet confidence in their abilities, stamina to overcome challenges, poise in every interaction, respect for their clients, peers, and supervisors, compassion for the community, and humility in their work. They understood that the client comes first- they built strong relationships, remained client-focused in their intervention, and kept the therapy all about the client, no ego. These clinicians would have never voted for themselves, which made awarding them with this distinction such an honor. Congratulations to Madison Merrill, Robin Clifford, Angela Nicotera, and Shae-Lynn Antonides!

More celebratory news in honor of Speech-Language-Hearing Month: last month our students were able to participate in a special interdisciplinary event hosted by Daemon University. This event involved a simulated hospital room with a robot simulated patient. Given a case history and after assessing the case, our graduate clinicians had to share their expertise with students from other disciplines. It was a wild success!

Daemen University’s Center for Interprofessional Learning and Simulation (CILS) hosted a spring Interprofessional Event (IPE) on April 8, 14, and 21, welcoming 146 students from Daemen’s physician assistant, registered nurse and nurse practitioner, and physical therapy programs, as well as 24 sp...

So much to celebrate this month…. We will start first with our biggest news: We were chosen to be New York State’s only Parkinson Voice Project Therapy and Research Center. It is an honor to share this space with the other prestigious universities to support those with Parkinson’s. While we have had a Speak Out! Program for years, we now are the official center in NYS. Congratulations to Christina Mule' and Dr. Anita Senthinathan for working tirelessly to obtain this recognition!

So proud of our second year graduate student and ASHA student leader Aliyah Hodges who participated in Hill Day, where ASHA members meet with congressional representatives to advocate for multiple CSD-related bills. She and Tim Kennedy discussed the LEAP Act, a bill he is introducing that would ensure that audiologists and SLPs can access higher loan limits next year to help pay for their professional degrees. With such staffing shortages, it is important that there are no barriers to those seeking out our profession.

Congressman Kennedy introduced the Loan Equity for Advanced Professionals Act, which restores federal student loan access for advanced-degree students whose borrowing limits were reduced under H.R. 1.

Yesterday, our clinicians demonstrated “eerily” creative activities and skills! Witch’s potions, Frankenstein crafts, spider smash, monster footprints, potato head dress up, “feed the monster” games, mummy wraps, and trick-or-treating filled the sessions in the clinic. It was such a fun day all around! Happy Halloween to those who celebrate!

This week, first year student clinicians learned the importance of behavior modification strategies at a local elementary school. After a “rowdy” first day, the clinicians saw how increased positive praise, colorful visuals, and agenda, and a friendly kids vs clinicians points system can turn around a session and have a deep impact on our clients. Well done Maddie D, Carly B, and Georgia R!

We are back on Facebook after a hiatus for orientation and clinic preparation. So happy to highlight our G2s as they competed in our third annual Iron Chef competition. SLP students teamed up with students from the Nutrition and Dietetics department for a multidisciplinary event! Each team created a dish to fit a specific client profile with various restrictions. This year brought fierce competition and extra creativity. Congrats to all teams!

On Monday, September 29, the Speech-Language Pathology and Nutrition and Dietetics Departments, along with Chartwells Higher Education, hosted their 3rd annual Interdisciplinary Iron Chef competition in Caudell Hall. Speech-Language Pathology and Nutrition and Dietetics students collaborated to crea...

On this last day of Speech-Language-and-Hearing Month, we want to express gratitude for a special cohort of students… and to “humble-brag.” The current G1 cohort (Class of 2026) is a special one. They aren’t just here to check boxes and get through graduate school. They see each opportunity as one to grow. They have proven to be compassionate, skilled, creative, and masterful in their clinical work all while meeting the rigors of their coursework. They are kind to each other and especially gracious towards the faculty. A few weeks ago they showered their clinical supervisors with kind words and baskets of goodies to thank them for the time and care each one has given this year. We are equally grateful for them. Our world will be much better as they enter the profession next year.
