Please join us in congratulating Brent Boleslav, MS, a PhD student in the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, on receiving a Student & Trainee and Early-stage Professional Abstract Award from the American College of Clinical Pharmacology (ACCP)! 🎉

The award recognizes outstanding research abstracts submitted by students, trainees and early-stage professionals. Boleslav will attend the 2026 ACCP Annual Meeting in Bethesda, MD, Sept. 26-29, where he will present his award-winning abstract, "Translational PK/PD Modeling for Prediction of Clinical Response to TAS102 Plus Talazoparib in Advanced Colorectal Cancer from Patient-Derived Xenografts."

His research focuses on developing pharmacometric and systems pharmacology models that quantify how drugs behave in combination and he uses those models to predict clinical response and support dose selection. 🥼

“It's a real honor to be selected and have my research recognized,” said Boleslav. “It gives me a great opportunity to share my work, attend this conference, and make connections as I look to finish my dissertation and move towards the next stage of my career. “

Painful neuropathy affects quality of life—sometimes long term, for cancer patients.

Researchers at SPPS are working to better understand this phenomenon and find solutions to reduce this debilitating side effect, helping patients maintain their quality of life and stay on treatment. 💊

Jason Sprowl, PhD, associate professor of pharmaceutical sciences, was recently awarded more than $410,000 from the National Cancer Institute to study how the body processes and responds to a powerful chemotherapy drug monomethyl auristatin E (MMAE) and why it can cause nerve damage in some patients.

“Cancer patients are going through enough as it is, and then they have the concern of whether their nervous system is going to suffer, and subsequently, their quality of life,” Sprowl said. “If we can alleviate the side effects, then we don’t have to lower dosages or stop treatment, which of course, would be a huge benefit to cancer patients.” 💙

Welcome season is one of our favorite times of the year. 💙

After welcoming our newest SPPS students during orientation last week, we were proud to join the UB community for Convocation, the university's first convocation in decades and a new tradition that officially welcomed first-year and transfer students to campus.

The event also marked a new era for the university, as students kicked off their UB experience alongside President Genco, who is starting her own chapter as UB's 16th president 🤘

It has been an exciting week across campus as students settled in, and we can't wait to see where their UB journeys lead! 🦬

Please join us in congratulating Bob Wahler, PharmD, on his appointment as assistant director of Experiential Education at SPPS! 🎉

In this role, Wahler joins the Division of Education and Teaching Innovation in the Department of Pharmacy Practice and serves on the department’s executive leadership team. He will lead and oversee the Introductory Pharmacy Practice Experience program, support the Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experience program and work closely with faculty, preceptors and partners to enhance experiential learning opportunities for students.

With extensive experience in education and leadership, Wahler will play an important role in advancing the school's experiential education programs and supporting service-learning initiatives for students. 🥼

Could salmon and other fatty fish unlock new treatments for severe lung disease? 🫁

researchers are exploring the healing properties of molecules found within omega-3 fatty acids as a potential treatment for acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) and other inflammatory conditions.

Zhenjia Wang, PhD, SUNY Empire Innovation Professor at UB SPPS, recently received a $2M, four-year grant from the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute of the National Institutes of Health to look for a safer and more effective treatment for ARDS using omega-3 fatty acids.

“A lot of people take omega-3 supplements to help prevent vascular diseases because omega-3 fatty acids are effective at combatting inflammation,” Wang says. “Recent studies show that the body converts one type of omega-3 fatty acid, DHA (docosahexaenoic acid), into healing molecules called resolvins. They are called this because they can resolve the inflammation, encourage healing and allow the immune system to keep fighting infections.”

If successful, this strategy could represent a completely new way of treating inflammatory diseases beyond ARDS, including autoimmune diseases, arthritis and Crohn’s disease.

What better way to kick off a new academic year? Café & Commons is now open in the Pharmacy Building! 🎉

After months of planning, renovation and collaboration with university partners, we're proud to welcome the SPPS community to this new space for dining, connection and community. 💙

The café offers a variety of grab-and-go food and beverage options for the South Campus community, while the adjacent recreation area provides a place for students to unwind between classes with games like air hockey and foosball.

As part of the transformation, new wall graphics installed throughout the building help bring fresh energy and identity to our spaces, creating an even more welcoming environment for students, faculty, staff and visitors.
