Hi! My name is Tiffany Nhan, and I’m an MSW/PhD student who’s completing my practicum placement abroad this summer in Viet Nam. I will be interning at a child social welfare agency, where I will have the chance to bridge my interests in youth development, policy and social welfare in a global context.

As a Vietnamese American, I’m so excited to explore my heritage and connect to my roots! Here are pictures of me in a traditional ao dai, along with photos from my last trip to Viet Nam.

“What I think is at stake is the future of social work. The future of the profession and what it is and who we are as social workers and who we say we’re going to be.”

In our latest episode we speak with Alan Dettlaff PhD to explore the deeper tensions his experience reveals. Drawing on his journey from child welfare investigator to abolitionist scholar, he reflects on how the profession’s stated commitments to racial justice often clash with the realities of institutional power, funding streams and risk aversion. Dettlaff also offers a sobering assessment of what is at stake: nothing less than the future of the profession itself.

"What I think is at stake is the future of social work. The future of the profession and what it is and who we are as social workers and who we say we're going to be."
