Art Alumni Spotlight! Taylor Robers (MFA in Studio Art 2023) has self published an illustrated guide, Ecology of Home Vol. 1 Cedar Creek.

Over three years, artist and writer Taylor Robers explored Old Growth Forests, Cedar Swamps, Prairies, and Oak Savannahs on her visits to Cedar Creek Ecosystem Science Reserve in east-central Minnesota.

In this illustrated guide, Robers walks us through the diverse ecosystems of Cedar Creek, shares what she learns from scientists in the field, and reflects on the women leaders of Cedar Creek in the 1930s and a scientist with chronic illness who changed our understanding of life in 1941.

Through Ecology of Home, Robers plans to explore the diversity of our ecosystems near and far, talk with people who are working in restoration and in reciprocity with Earth, and share what she learns through visual and written form.

Sophia Litterio, “Vulgarity of a Vulgaris”, 2026
Oil, modeling paste, and glitter on canvas 36x48in.

The s*xual paradox women in our society face is that they are expected to give themselves s*xually to men, yet they are shamed for embracing their personal s*xuality. She holds herself in an open, submissive position, ready to be taken, yet at the same time she censors her breasts and va**na, an act that represents her agency and autonomy in s*x. She stares down at those who approach her with her glittering eyes. Though she blushes, she doesn’t look away bashfully or ashamedly.

Litterio’s exhibition “GIRL WORLD”, is on view in the Department of Art Lower Gallery, Room B45 through 5/21/26

Undergraduate Art Student Spotlight! Mary Kate Gomez is a freshman Art student, pursuing a BFA with General Studio concentration.
This colored pencil landscape of North Campus was created for ART111: Drawing Fundamentals, which Gomez took with MFA Instructor Marjan Khorramgolkaran, in Spring 2026.

Q&A with Gomez:
Q: Why did you choose to depict UB North Campus from that angle, and what were you trying to capture/convey?
A: For my drawing, I tried to convey the beauty of a landscape I see every day, one that I often overlook and don’t appreciate. I tried to capture the colors of the sunset and the way the light reflects off the water and buildings.
Q: Are there any specific artists or art movements that inspired the style you chose to work in?
A: This piece is inspired by the impressionist movement that involves capturing everyday beauty through light, visible brushstrokes and open compositions.
Q: Do you have a favorite memory to share, from your time in art school so far?
A: One of my favorites was the Art in the Open event in October. I had so much fun watching the performances and visiting the grad students’ open studios.
Q: What inspires you to create?
A: What inspires me the most is being able to express myself without words. I do this by portraying themes of femininity, nature, and identity in my art.

“Girl World”, Prints by Sophia Litterio
In the Department of Art Lower Gallery
Center For the Arts, Room B45
On View: May 14-21, 2026
Reception: Thursday, May 14, 5-7PM

Exhibition Statement:
In my art I aim to explore girl/womanhood through the lenses of lived experiences as well as the stories told to me by the women I’ve met throughout my life. These experiences and stories shaped me as a person, as a woman, and often changed my way of thinking. For this independent study my goal was to merge my printmaking and oil painting practices to create an exhibition that explores various facets of life as a girl and as a woman. The works in the Girl World exhibition will deal with topics of s*xuality, stigma, societal expectations, and menstruation.

The Artist:
Sophia Litterio is a Senior B.A. in Studio Art student, who has created this work through a Printmaking Independent Study under the mentorship of Jeff Sherven.

NOTE: This exhibition runs concurrent to the N**e Figure Drawing Competition exhibition, in the same gallery.
