Hi everyone! My name is Sharmila Porter. I am a 2L and the current secretary for LALSA. Here is a flashback photo to my undergrad graduation and I look forward to my law school graduation. These past two years of law school has taught me so much about myself and life in general. I learned that the best support system you can have is family and friends. LALSA has been one of those support system that has introduced me to many wonderful people, I am glad to be apart of such a great organization. Once I graduate I’ll be the first Latina in my family to be an attorney and I hope to carry that Latin pride throughout my career.

Hi everyone! My name is Rina Hernández. I am a 3L and the current LALSA President. Here is a flashback photo to the beginning of 1L year; so much has happened since then! Throughout it all, I have always found comfort and support in LALSA. As a first-generation American and first-generation high school, college and soon-to-be law school graduate, I am glad to have been part of such an amazing and supportive LALSA chapter for the past three years. I was recently accepted to the Air Force JAG Corps and I know that I’ll continue carrying my Latina pride and values with me wherever around the world my JAG career takes me.

Join us as Luis Chiesa moderates a discussion between two prominent legal scholars to talk about Puerto Rico, Statehood, and the current status of issues surrounding this topic today. Christina Ponsa-Kraus and Jorge Farinacci Fernós will also widen the discussion to ask the critical question - what do Puerto Ricans want? This event will aim to educate us all on how the issue of statehood is debated in Puerto Rico, and the process and substance of government efforts, from both the US and Puerto Rico, of the last three years.

To start off our LALSA’s weekly feature we are featuring Leighann Ramirez who is currently a 3L! 🥳 ()
“Being a first gen Latina law student is a daily dose of imposter syndrome, exhaustion, and grit. Looking back on these years I see tremendous academic, personal, and character growth-which I’m very thankful for. I have served on the Human Rights Law Review, been recipient of multiple fellowships/scholarships, was a refugee resettlement caseworker at International Institute of Buffalo, interned at Ayuda my 1L summer working with survivors of DV and sexual assault in D.C., interned at UnLocal, Inc. my 2L summer where I helped my first client win asylum, worked a full academic year helping represent immigrant clients held in detention centers in Batavia, NY and Dilley, TX as a Student Attorney, and interned with Brooklyn Defender Services. I’m excited to finish off my last semester as an extern with the Bronx Defenders and culminate my term as Vice-Chair with the National Latina/o Law Student Association at our 23rd Annual Conference in the Bay Area. My biggest achievement throughout my JD/MSW program has been gaining tools to dismantle oppressive systems affecting our communities. There is no better time than the present to make change. Siempre Pa'lante.” - Leighann Ramirez
