The University at Buffalo, part of the State University of New York system, sponsors over 80 study abroad and exchange programs, all of which are available to UB students and many of which are available to students outside of UB. For the final day of her social media takeover, Moca is sharing her favorite memories from studying abroad in Japan!

"TeamLab is an interactive art exhibit in Tokyo. I highly recommend it to those who like to take artsy photos for their Insta feed. I spent a couple of hours there, and it was fun looking at the different artwork using digital technology."

"Walking around Higashi Chaya District was an experience I had never imagined before. The old architecture, food, and desserts are definitely something you should try! Visiting Kanazawa over the summer is great, but I hear that the winter is beautiful when the city is covered in snow."

"One of the first places I visited when I arrived in Japan was a local Onsen, a public bath. During this time, Japan was still a bit chilly in the month of March, so bathing in an Onsen was perfect for the weather. The scenery was amazing since I was right below a cherry blossom tree as flower petals fell into the Onsen’s water."

"Initially, I was supposed to look at Tokyo’s skyline from the Tokyo Skytree. But after learning that there was a special exhibit for JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, it became the best day of my life yet!"

Today, Moca is sharing one of the favorite places she visited while studying abroad in Japan: the city of Kanazawa!

"If you want to experience architecture from Edo Japan, this is the place to visit! Kanazawa isn’t a big city like Tokyo or Osaka, but there’s a lot to do! My favorite memory from Kanazawa was walking through the streets of Higashi Chaya District. I felt like I stepped into a different time period!"

Today, student Moca Tanaka is sharing her favorite foods she had while studying abroad at International Christian University in Japan!

"There are a lot of things I miss from Japan, and one of them is the food. From presentation to taste, food in Japan is spot on. Any cuisine you can think of in America is better in Japan (Chinese, French, you name it). But there was one thing I really missed while I was there: New York-style pizza and bagels. Fun fact: Japan has the second most Michelin-starred restaurants in the world after France!"

"From tall skyscrapers to temples rich in history, Tokyo has many attractions. As an ICU Japan exchange student, I visited this wonderful city every weekend. Tokyo is one of my favorite cities in the world, and I highly recommend everyone to visit it at least once in their life. There’s so much to do!"

For the final social media takeover of the semester, Moca Tanaka is sharing her experiences studying abroad at International Christian University just outside of Tokyo, Japan last Spring. Moca was lucky to begin her time in Japan during one of the most beautiful times of the year:

"Cherry blossom season was one of the most beautiful sceneries I have ever seen. Cherry blossoms are very important in Japanese culture, representing the beginning and end of many milestones in life during the months of March and April (e.g., graduation, new school year, and joining the workforce). Although I have seen cherry blossoms in America, this was the first time I had been surrounded by this many. To put it into perspective, they are literally everywhere in Japan!"

On this , we’d like to celebrate the world’s beauty via the lens of students! Let us introduce Emily Kurtzhalts, an Environmental Design major who participated in ’s Summer 2022 - Sustainable Futures program in Costa Rica.

Photo 1: “This is my host mom Sonia and I out to dinner at a local sushi restaurant. From the moment I arrived at her house, Sonia told me that her house was my house too and made me feel welcomed. We spent time watching movies together, drinking coffee and talking in the afternoons, and she even taught me how to knit. Sonia and I became incredibly close during my stay and she would tell people that she wanted me to stay in Costa Rica and take me in as her daughter. Leaving Sonia was the hardest part about the end of my trip. As we hugged goodbye Sonia reminded me again that no matter where she lived, her home would always be my home. I cherish the time I spent with Sonia and we still keep in touch. Arguably the best part of my time in Costa Rica was meeting Sonia, my adopted mom.”

Photo 3: “As a Feature Twirler for UB, I had to bring along my True Blue Pride just like I do when twirling with the marching band at football games. I also was able to takeover the UB feature twirler Instagram for a day to share my experience living in Costa Rica. I was such a fun opportunity to share my study abroad trip and to represent the Feature Twirlers overseas!"

For the final day of Will's social media takeover, she is sharing some aspects of Korean culture that she learned about while studying abroad:

“A big part of studying abroad in South Korea for me was being able to immerse myself in the culture. Going to the palaces and the museums in Seoul and Busan was cheap or sometimes even free! You could also see how well they preserved their culture just by going to Hanok (traditional Korean house) villages where there would be cute coffee shops within them. It made it feel like although these houses were from the past, they were still important to keep them alive this way.”
