Big news from the College of Arts and Sciences: The world’s first doctorate in applied ontology! A groundbreaking program at the intersection of philosophy, AI, data science and information systems.

Led by Barry Smith, SUNY Distinguished Professor, and John Beverley, assistant professor in the Department of Philosophy, the fully online doctoral program will prepare students to tackle some of the biggest challenges in artificial intelligence and knowledge engineering by helping systems understand and organize complex information.

From health care and biotech to finance, defense and e-commerce, applied ontologists are shaping the future of how humans and machines work with data, and UB continues to lead the way in this rapidly growing field.

The new PhD program, and a master’s launched last year, are the only graduate level applied ontology degrees in the world, filling a critical need in a burgeoning field.

The College was honored to celebrate the newest inductees into Phi Beta Kappa National Honor Society last week. 🌟

The April 28 ceremony recognized nearly 100 outstanding students whose academic excellence, intellectual curiosity and commitment to the liberal arts and sciences set them apart.

Mark Seery, PhD, president of UB’s Phi Beta Kappa and professor in the Department of Psychology states, "This year’s class of inductees is made up of well-rounded thinkers who are well on their way into developing into life-long learners and impressive human beings. They meet the high expectations we have of the best and brightest students at UB."

Congratulations to the 2026 Phi Beta Kappa inductees on their achievements!

After 33 years in the Department of Chemistry, Luis Colón, SUNY Distinguished Professor and A. Conger Goodyear Professor, is retiring this semester. His career is defined as much by the students he mentored as by the research he conducted.

From guiding more than 50 graduate students to expanding opportunities for underrepresented scholars, his impact will be felt for generations.

A remarkable career, and an even greater influence on the UB community.
