Congratulations on a successful academic year!🎉

As the 25-26 school year came to a close, we celebrated with a reception for all our graduates and seniors. Our students have accomplished a lot this year alone, and we couldn’t be more proud!

We also extend our appreciation to our faculty, alumni and partners for being an important part of the community and for supporting our students throughout their journey.

Wishing everyone a wonderful summer and continued success ahead! ☀️

Professor John Atkinson and PhD student Ghazal Vasseghi have quantified the rapid release of microfibers from cigarette filters, showing that a single filter can release 24 microfibers within 20 seconds and up to 144 over 10 days 🚬🌊

These fibers carry toxins such as ni****ne, heavy metals, and PFAS, posing risks to wildlife and water quality.

Both Professor Atkinson and Vasseghi co-authored and published their research to the Journal of Hazardous Materials: Plastic.

Their research provides new insights into a major environmental issue and highlights opportunities for better cigarette disposal and pollution prevention strategies.

🚧 PhD students represented at the Transportation Research Board Annual Meeting!

Mohamed Hassan Lasheen presented a poster on evaluating the stiffness of cracked prestressed concrete beams using machine learning.

Pranay Singh presented on enhancing anchorage-zone durability in pretensioned girders using additively manufactured SHCC shells, focusing on material design and a proof-of-concept study.

💡The TRB Annual Meeting brings engineers, researchers, and policymakers together to discuss innovations in transportation, including bridge safety, efficiency, and durability.

is on the map at the ACI Concrete Convention 2025 💙🧱

This October, PhD students Mohamed Hassan Lasheen and Pranay Singh presented their research on:

Using machine learning to better assess concrete beam cracking and bridge conditions

Integrating 3D-printed advanced concrete materials into precast systems to improve durability of prestressed bridge girders

We’re also excited to congratulate Pranay on receiving the ACI Graduate Student Convention Stipend, supporting his travel and professional development at this major international event 👏

Proud of our students for advancing the future of concrete infrastructure and representing UB on a global stage. 💪🌍
