The 6-part series kicks off this Thursday with a lecture on "What Disney (and the Rest of Us) Can Learn from the Earliest Surviving Mulan Film," by Christopher Rea of the University of British Columbia. Community Language Classes start next week at the UB Confucius Institute. Classes are held 6-8:00 pm in the Confucius Institute classroom on UB's north campus; and focused on beginning through intermediate students. Each class meets one evening per week. Learn more and register here:

We are planning for fall 2021 evening classes to take place in-person. Smaller groups will meet in the Confucius Institute classroom (113 UB Commons). Larger groups may meet in classrooms in nearby campus buildings for lower density.

Join the UB Asian Studies Program this Friday at 12:00 for an Asia at Noon talk by Hsiao-wen Cheng of the University of Pennsylvania on her book "Divine, Demonic and Disordered," Cheng considers accounts of “manless women” in Song Dynasty China, many of which depict women who suffered from “enchantment disorder” or who engaged in “intercourse with ghosts”—conditions with specific symptoms and behavioral patterns. Cheng questions conventional binary gender analyses and shifts attention away from women’s reproductive bodies and familial roles.
