A professor will lead a new project to create more inclusive college classrooms that recognize the neurodiversity of students by building micro-credential training courses for computer science faculty.

The two-year, $293,000 grant from the National Science Foundation will help improve the educational experiences of neurodivergent students, said Sam Abramovich, principal grant investigator, director of the UB Open Education Research Lab and associate professor in the Department of Learning and Instruction.

Neurodivergent individuals have neurological differences that affect the way they process information, communicate and view the world. They include people with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, or ADHD, autism spectrum disorder, dyslexia, dyspraxia and Tourette syndrome.

The Open Education Research Lab will eventually publish the micro-credentials and curriculum so others can use the tools.

“These micro-credentials will give instructors the training they need to transform their practice and create an ecosystem of belonging for neurodiverse undergraduate computer science students,” Abramovich said.

faculty are working on a new study to better understand the racial disparities within the library system: 83 percent of librarians in 2020 identified as white. This leaves those who identify as Black, Indigenous and people of color in the minority.

Amy VanScoy, associate professor of information science, and Sunha Kim, assistant professor of counseling, school and educational psychology and learning and instruction, will study why librarians of color leave the profession with a new grant from the Laura Bush 21st Century Librarian Program.

“There are lots of initiatives focused on recruiting a diverse library workforce, but if the profession can't retain BIPOC librarians who have already been recruited, then recruitment strategies will have a limited and temporary effect,” said VanScoy. “So, discovering effective strategies for retention of BIPOC librarians is critical.”

DIGITAL-AGE LITERACY: Challenges and nuances explained — For Heidi Julien, a professor of information science, who has devoted her career to education, scholarship and digital literacy, public acceptance of misinformation is an alarming, and old, problem. It could use a modern fix that starts with school librarians and civics lessons. New public clarity about the need for change came from the pandemic’s highlighting of the life-saving power of good information.
