This Is What Workforce Development Looks Like

When many people hear “4-H,” they think of something fun for kids to do. While 4-H is certainly fun, it is also one of the most successful youth workforce-development programs available.

Today, 19 Cumberland County 4-H members completed a nine-month Country Ham Project. They followed every step of the curing process, met deadlines, worked through challenges and saw their projects through to completion. Each member also stood before judges at the Kentucky State Fair and delivered a speech about the science behind curing a country ham.

Along the way, they developed responsibility, time management, attention to detail, perseverance, scientific knowledge and public-speaking skills. Those aren’t just 4-H skills they are skills that will serve them throughout life and in the workforce.

Congratulations to all 19 members! You did much more than complete a ham project. You proved that you can begin something challenging, stay committed and finish strong. We are proud of every one of you!

🍀 Today Was a Great Day for Cumberland County 4-H! 🍀

Today was about so much more than awards, projects, ribbons and premium checks. It was a celebration of our young people, their hard work and the community that continues to stand behind them.

Thank you to the army of volunteers who gave their time, talents and energy to provide another great opportunity for our Cumberland County 4-H members. From preparing meals and setting up tables to organizing projects, recognizing accomplishments and encouraging our youth, today would not have been possible without you.

We are also incredibly grateful for the families, donors, community partners and supporters who continue to invest in the future of Cumberland County’s young people.

The 4-H Beyond Ready movement reminds us that our responsibility is not simply to prepare young people for one contest, one event or one moment. We are helping them develop confidence, responsibility, resilience, leadership and a heart for service—skills that will prepare them for work, for life and for whatever comes next.

Today was a wonderful reflection of what happens when a community comes together around its young people. Our 4-H members are not only preparing for the future—they are already making Cumberland County stronger.

Thank you for helping our young people become Beyond Ready! 🍀
