Mindshift Mentoring

Mindshift Mentoring I mentor people who are successful by every measure, yet quietly feel something is missing. I help them align their true purpose with the life they're living.

Mentoring is the process, hypnosis is the accelerator.

Yesterday was Day 6 since my partial knee surgery on 8/26. So, here is my progress report on the use of Clinical Hypnosis for my pre op prep and post op usage for maximized recovery (ex: fewer meds, less pain, better sleep. etc.).

I had my follow-up with the PA at Emerge Ortho and it went extraordinarily well! He checked the dressing, tidied everything up, and then gave me the best news yet.

He looked at me and said, "Put that walker away—that’s just a head thing now, you don't need it." (He’d actually caught me carrying it down the hall on my way in!) I asked about switching to a cane or crutch, and he said, "Nope, don't need those either. You can walk normal now."

So, away they go!

It’s amazing what happens when the mind and body get on the same page. My next follow-up is on September 8th to get the staples removed, so I’ll post another update then!

Day 4 Knee Replacement Update: Clinical Hypnosis in Action

Huge shoutout to Dr. Bowers and the entire team at EmergeOrtho & Southpoint Surgery Center! (4.5/5 stars—the only deduction is they aren't right here in Burlington!).

As promised, here is my partial knee replacement progress report.

I’ve been using clinical hypnosis techniques (pre-op & post-op) as a primary recovery tool—the same methods I provide for clients in my practice. Clinical studies show it can reduce recovery time and post-op pain by up to 50%.

The 4-Day Breakdown:
• Day 1: Zero anesthesia fog, clear mind, and no pain. Slept deeply.
• Day 2: Surgical block wore off with some episodic nerve pain while elevated, but very little swelling and zero intense pain.
• Day 4 (Today): 3 great nights of sleep, minimal pain medication, and already walking around the kitchen without the walker!

Beyond the medical team, huge thanks to my friends and my meditation group at First Presbyterian Church in Burlington for keeping me well-fed!

What I’m experiencing isn't magic—it’s applied medical science. Spirit-Mind-body integration drastically improves surgical recovery. Over and out for now!

Over my last couple of posts, we talked about how stress creates friction in the body and wears a person down mentally, physically, and spiritually over time.

Today, I want to share a real-world example of how we can actively reverse that stress response—and I'm putting it to the test on myself starting tomorrow morning.

Early in my career as a certified clinical hypnotist—during the same period I served as an associate chaplain at Gastonia Memorial Hospital—medical hypnosis was one of the main specialties in my private practice.

Pre- and post-op surgical preparation was by far one of the most requested services I provided. Clients would complete a pre-surgery hypnosis session, listen to their customized recording for two weeks prior to surgery, and then play a post session recovery recording right in the recovery room. Working side-by-side with open-minded physicians, we saw remarkable results.

My passion for this actually started during my first semester of graduate school. A close friend borrowed my self-hypnosis textbook, wrote her own script, and recorded it in her own voice—the voice you naturally trust the most is your own. After undergoing a full mastectomy, her surgeon confirmed her recovery time was cut nearly in half.

If you think this sounds like a "mind over matter" myth, the medical research proves otherwise.

In the video linked below, Dr. Cave—a Stanford and Harvard-trained board-certified anesthesiologist—explains how he uses clinical hypnosis right inside the operating room. He highlights that hypnosis isn't just a simple placebo; it actively changes your brain’s neurochemistry and physical biology. By loosening up the "cognitive rigidity" that keeps our nervous system locked in stress, hypnosis allows the body to tap into its natural potential to heal tissue faster, reduce pain, and drastically lower recovery times.

Now, it’s my turn to put this to the test. Tomorrow morning, I am undergoing a partial knee replacement—my very first time using self-hypnosis to speed my recovery from surgery. Two weeks ago, I recorded my own self-hypnosis protocol, using my own voice, and I’ve been using it daily to prepare my body and mind and soul for healing.

Clinical studies show that pre- and post-operative hypnosis can reduce recovery time by up to 50%, lower pain levels, and decrease the need for post-op medications.

Over my next few posts, I’ll be sharing my real-time progress, recovery milestones, and personal experience putting these clinical tools to work on myself.

What Trips Your Trigger When You're Teetering on the Edge?

In the previous post, we talked about road rage and how stress overload makes us explode behind the wheel. But the driver's seat isn't the only place where unmanaged pressure shows up.

Have you ever had a day where a dropped spoon, a slow computer, or a simple question from a family member made you instantly want to snap?

When you're already carrying a full load of hidden anxiety, financial worries, or work demands, your nervous system is essentially running on redline. You're teetering right on the edge. In that state, it doesn't take a major crisis to set off a rage reaction—it just takes one tiny straw to break the camel's back.

Anger isn't the root problem here. It's the pressure valve blowing off because the engine is overheating.

This is where understanding the Hypnotic Arts & Sciences becomes a practical everyday tool. Hypnosis teaches you how to recognize when your system is teetering before you reach that tipping point. It gives you a way to manually dial down the internal pressure so small interruptions stay small, instead of triggering an explosive reaction.

Here is a quick way to hit reset and relax right now: I've put together a guided imagery recording to help dial down the tension and give your nervous system a break: "Relax Away the Tension & Stress".

Have you noticed how short everyone’s fuse seems to be lately?

Whether it’s road rage on the morning commute, feeling overloaded at work, stressing over gas prices, or navigating family tensions—it can feel like everyone is just one minor inconvenience away from snapping.

Behind a lot of that frustration isn't just bad moods; it's unmanaged stress. Anger is often just stress wearing a mask.

That’s why I’m using this page to share the Hypnotic Arts & Sciences—a practical look at how your mind actually works, and how you can use simple, proven techniques to retrain your brain's reaction to daily pressure.

If you want an eye-opening look at what unmanaged pressure does to our bodies and minds, check out the documentary "Silent, Portrait of a Killer: 👉 https://youtu.be/eYG0ZuTv5rs?si=QLpYEMlcxZ__2iMa

It's a fantastic watch and highlights why managing our internal state isn't just a luxury—it's essential for our health.

Starting with my next post, we’re going to tackle the real-life symptoms of stress one by one.

First up in my next post: Anger. We’ll look at why it flares up so quickly when we're stressed, and how to start shifting your mind out of reaction mode before it takes over.

Stay tuned, and take a deep breath today!

In my work as a Life Skills Mentor and Clinical Hypnotist, I support people who feel stuck during major life shifts—whether navigating a career change, redefining themselves, or deciding what comes next.

The challenge at these crossroads is rarely a lack of willpower. It is the hidden resistance of subconscious habits and beliefs.

My practice is backed by over 23 years of experience spanning clinical hypnosis, applied psychology instruction, and behavioral education.

I do not operate within the framework of conventional life coaching or motivational platitudes. Instead, my practice integrates structured, behaviorally informed mentoring with clinical hypnotic techniques.

This foundation was heavily shaped by 20 years as a Life Skills | Applied Psychology professor within the North Carolina Community College System and the Department of Corrections. These high-stakes, concrete environments demanded a brutal, deeply grounded optimization of human behavior, survival, and adaptation. They taught me how change actually functions in the real world.

Let’s talk and explore the possibilities! I am available virtually or by phone or email or text. You can review my CV (qualifications) on my website: davidgrinstead2.academia.edu.

Sessions are offered virtually or in person at my office.
