Between 1968 and 1971, eighteen sculptures were placed along Vermont’s (then-new) Interstate Highways from the Canadian border to Massachusetts.  Seven of the sculptures were marble sourced from the Vermont Marble Company in Proctor in 1968, and eleven were created in 1971 at the S.T. Griswald Industrial Park in Williston, VT using concrete. This project was the vision of Paul Aschenbach, Professor of Sculpture at the University of Vermont, who invited 21 artists from eight countries to create sculptures for the public domain. The State of Vermont has been restoring the sculptures, many of which fell into decay and/or were enveloped by vegetation, even forested over. An exhibition and associated events about this history will be at our Colburn Gallery next spring. Stay tuned.
