CDAE Faculty Focus: Renée Reizman

Beginning this fall, she will teach Communication Design 1 and Design Innovation to students in the Public Communication and Community-Centered Design Majors!

As an interdisciplinary artist, writer, educator, and designer focused on community storytelling, public engagement, accessibility, and social change, she brings extensive experience.

She has previously taught digital art, graphic design, visual communications, and social engagement at Pepperdine University, the University of Southern California, and California State University, Dominguez Hills.

Yesterday, the UVM College of Agriculture and Life Sciences came together for our annual retreat at the Horticulture Research and Education Center.

Dean Linda Prokopy and President Marlene Tromp shared updates with the group, while Asim Zia and Stephanie Hurley updated us on the progress of our Strategic Alignment Plan.

It was a great opportunity to connect, reflect on our work, and look ahead to what’s next for CALS.

CDAE Professor David Conner is a researcher on Supporting Midsize Producers, emphasizing the vitality of these farms for long-term resilience in food systems, rural communities, the economy, and the environment.

At land-grant universities such as UVM, researchers and partners help understand and support mid-size farm vitality. This interdisciplinary research brought together over 30 scholars across 18 states to reinvigorate the "Agriculture of the Middle" goal.

The address highlighted key areas of progress under the new strategic plan, Green, Gold, and Bold. It brought members of the UVM community together to celebrate accomplishments and look ahead at what's still to come.

What makes the Aiken Gardens such a haven for monarch butterflies this time of year?

Over the past three years, UVM faculty such as Mark Starrett, students in Home & Garden Horticulture labs, UVM Horticulture Club members, and work-study students have transformed these garden beds by adding a variety of U.S. native perennials that support pollinators.

Summer interns Anthony (Ryan) Nolletti, Julian Siegel, and Gavin Young currently maintain the garden!

This fall, the team will continue removing non-native and weedy plants and adding new native species to attract an even greater variety of birds and pollinators.

This work is supported by the UVM College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, UVM Horticulture Club, Department of Sustainable Landscape Management, and the Lyman P. Wood Horticultural Education Endowment.

A recent Observer article, 'Shouldn’t we all be giving Ariana Grande a break?', highlights UVM research.

Researcher Jordan Levinson notes that body image remains heavily stigmatized and cautions against commenting on others' appearances.

UVM’s Nutrition and Food Sciences department, led by Lizzy Pope, teaches from a weight-inclusive perspective to dismantle stigmas surrounding food and body talk. This work highlights urgent societal issues that affect those both in the spotlight and those not.

Meet Anthony Protomastro and Katie Ballard, some of the friendly faces at the UVM Morgan Horse Farm. 🐴

As an intern, Anthony has gained extensive hands-on experience on the expansive 215-acre property, with its sprawling green. Before joining the Morgan Horse Farm crew in Weybridge, he had experience with small animals, but he has since learned much about large-animal care.

On a day at the farm, he collaborates with apprentices, interns, and managers to both care for the horses and learn from them.

Faculty Manager Katie Ballard also walks us through the internship process at the Morgan Horse Farm and provides a glimpse of the many projects students have developed.
