Four Champlain College students took third place at the University of Vermont's annual Hackathon this past semester, competing against 100+ students from UVM, Brown University, and Middlebury College.

The team, consisting of Ryan Buck, Deris O'Malley, Christopher Eichert, and Thomas Flavin Jr., built EcoTrace, a website designed to make tracking personal environmental impact more accessible, in just eight hours.

As Ryan Buck put it: "It gives a chance to create a project from start to finish, and you have only eight hours — it has to work at the end of that. It's just an opportunity to practice what we're learning and really get more hands-on experience."

The team, known as Chauncey's Chosen, credits Champlain's hands-on, interdisciplinary approach to computer science education with preparing them to collaborate effectively under pressure.

✅ Building the confidence to navigate a brand-new setting
✅ Developing transferable skills that bring value in any workplace
✅ Gaining real industry experience

This week, a new group of students is headed to Asia, with one student following in Taylor's footsteps, being a third-generation intern at Kura Monzen in Kyoto, Japan!

With thanks to the Freeman Foundation for supporting our students and making these experiences possible.

One year after graduating from Champlain College, Vivi Torontali '25 is fresh off the trail from her first professional solo exhibition, Chromatopography: Landscapes in Line and Color.

This collection, which started in her Creative Media Portfolio II class, transforms topographic data into layered visual compositions. "Chromatopography reveals the hidden rhythms of the earth, inviting viewers to experience terrain as something alive: breathing, flowing, and quietly pulsing."

When asked what they're carrying with them from their time at Champlain, graduating seniors pointed not just to technical competencies, but to transferable skills they’ll carry no matter where their career goes:

🌟 The confidence to speak in front of a room full of strangers

🌟 The ability to communicate efficiently and adapt when the project, the team, or even the language changes

🌟 The courage to say “yes” even when it’s scary

This spring, seven graduating seniors sat down with admitted students and their families for panel discussions reflecting on their four years at Champlain College. Hear what these soon-to-be-graduates had to say: https://bit.ly/4tHqtnB
