This summer, 2/C Energy Systems Engineering student Trey McPherson completed his co-op with MWH Constructors on the Dennis Water Resource Recovery Facility project in Dennis, Massachusetts.

Throughout the summer, Trey gained hands-on experience in both field engineering and construction management. His work included reviewing project drawings, assisting with field layout, reviewing submittals, tracking equipment deliveries, conducting safety inspections, and working with programs such as Procore and Autodesk.

Trey also worked alongside superintendents, project engineers, field engineers, subcontractors, and safety personnel, gaining firsthand insight into the construction of large-scale water and wastewater infrastructure projects.

One of the most valuable parts of the experience was learning directly in the field, where Trey developed a deeper understanding of the importance of communication, organization, problem-solving, and safety on a construction project.

Safety in action
Massachusetts Maritime Academy students connected classroom learning with real-world industry experience during Safety Night, hosted by the MMA ASSP Student Section and the American Society of Safety Professionals Greater Boston Chapter. A huge shoutout to KASK for sponsoring this event and showcasing their safety hardhats to the students.

MMA alumni Meghan Petruzziello and Tim Condon of Turner Construction Company returned to campus to share their experiences in construction safety, discuss career pathways, and give cadets an inside look at where a career in safety can lead.
From the classroom to the construction site, opportunities like Safety Night give our cadets the chance to learn directly from industry professionals, build connections, and see what’s possible after MMA.

This summer, 2/C International Maritime Business major Hugo Langlais completed an internship with The CSL Group Inc. (Canada Steamship Lines) as a Commercial Intern.

As part of the CSL Americas commercial team, Hugo gained experience conducting dry-bulk market research and analyzing coastal commodity trade flows. He also participated in daily operations briefings, gaining firsthand exposure to fleet scheduling, voyage coordination, and charter party requirements.

One highlight of the summer was visiting the *Algoma Celebration*, a newly built 79,610 DWT Kamsarmax self-unloader, while she was discharging at the Eastern Salt Terminal. Seeing the vessel in operation offered a firsthand perspective on the scale, speed, and capacity of a modern self-unloader.

A special thank you to Rebecca Varnes, Bryan Taylor, Oliver D., and the entire CSL Americas team for their mentorship, guidance, and support throughout this incredible learning experience.

From the earliest days of construction to the final finishing touches, it has been incredible to watch Marinakis Hall, Massachusetts Maritime Academy’s new STEM building, come to life.

A tremendous thank you to BOND Brothers, Inc., Division of Capital Asset Management and Maintenance, Ellenzweig, and all of the partners whose expertise, dedication, and hard work made this state-of-the-art learning space possible.

This timelapse takes us from a construction site to a completed building in just a few moments. And while the building may be complete, there’s still more to come.

Later this fall, we look forward to officially celebrating Marinakis Hall and sharing the story behind the name that will become part of the Academy for generations to come.

This summer, 2/C Facilities Engineering major Isaac Li completed his first co-op at the Boston Scientific Quincy Distribution Center.

The experience gave Isaac his first opportunity to work in facilities engineering and apply the skills he’s developed in the classroom to real-world projects. During his co-op, he worked on standardizing preventive maintenance processes and collaborated with technicians to develop a more detailed P&ID for the facility’s chiller system.

Through these projects, Isaac gained a deeper understanding of the planning, communication, and teamwork required to keep complex facilities operating safely and efficiently. He also gained valuable insight into the day-to-day work of a facilities engineering team and the critical role it plays in supporting building operations.

His first co-op provided a strong foundation in facilities engineering and he’s looking forward to bringing what he learned back to campus as he continues building his career.

This summer, Marine Transportation Major Sarah Beal gained hands-on experience in es**rt towing as a Deckhand with E.N. Bisso & Son aboard the tugboats Christine S. and Elizabeth S. out of Port Canaveral, Florida.

Working primarily with tanker vessels, container ships, and bulk carriers, along with the occasional cruise ship, Sarah experienced firsthand the skill, coordination, and responsibility required to safely assist large commercial vessels in and out of port.

When she wasn’t out on jobs, Sarah helped maintain the Elizabeth S., taking on tasks including needle gunning and painting decks and bulkheads, reinforcing the importance of vessel maintenance and taking pride in the equipment she worked with every day.

The summer also brought Sarah one step closer to her long-term career goals. The sea time she earned will count toward the requirements for her Master of Towing Vessels license, providing valuable experience as she works toward a career in the maritime industry.
